Opinions are like armpits (i.e. everyone has a couple, and most of them stink) BUT ...
I have never had a USB JP1 cable, but read about lots of challenges with drivers, etc. here, whilst my simple parallel cable has worked fine for over three years, so, particularly if you have a parallel port, the parallel cable is cheaper, and seems to have fewer problems with setup (although that last claim by me is merely anecdotal, and may not be supported by facts).
