New User of 8910

Post by jbonham »

I am a new user of the URC-8910 and thought I would upgrade it to use with my DirecTV D-10 SAT Receiver. Much to my dismay when I called the tech support they couldnt help me with the upgrade. We tried three times over the phone (phone is VOIP) with no success. I was told from the start that it may not work with the VOIP setup. I was diggin around in the files section here and found the file I need in text format. I was somehow under the impression that the upgrade could be done with a wav file played over my computer. The text file is great but after all the posts I have read I didnt see how I could use it. I may be missing something here. In fact I am almost positive of it. What is it I am missing?

Also, if there is anyone out there that has the wav file for the D-10 receiver code 1377 let me know.

Thanks for the help for the new guy.

A JP1 cable.

The text file you mention can be opened (in Notepad), copied and imported into KM and the codes generated by KM can be pasted into IR. You then mix in your other upgrades and use IR to upload to your remote. IR also has the facilitiy to export to and import from WAV files but I always have difficulty with this as, it seems, do many others. There's nothing to stop you from downloading KM and IR.EXE, reading the documentation and trying to build your own WAV file but I'd strongly suggest getting that JP1 cable.

It seems that the jp1 cable is the only way to get what I need done. I will look into getting one soon or maybe try upgrading over a land line phone like the tech support suggested. Kinda sucks when you have this great remote that does everything but control the main device in your home theater. one remote for 5 devices and then there's the darn receiver. Kind of like the redheaded step-child of devices right now.

No offense to redheads or stepchildren.

The DirecTV D10 SAT 1377 KM file can also be opened directly in KM if saved locally first. No need to involve Notepad at all. ;)

While getting a JP1 cable would be your best bet, you can use IR and IRToWav to create your own wav file if you wish.

I realize there may be a way to get the wav file created and then upgrade. However, and I may be missing something, I have not found the proper documentation to explain how to do these things. I have read the keymap master text file and have yet to find anything within explaining the process for creating the wav file. The txt file for my device has been loaded into KM. What am I missing here? I really am trying to do this myself and learn the process for upgrading correctly. Just seems this may be more than my brain can handle at present.

Little Help? Thanks.

Once you have downloaded KM, IR and IRtoWAV, read the following doc:

http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/help/

That will tell you how to use JP1 in general, but it doesn't explain the IRtoWAV part, so the final steps are:

1) Fire up IR and select File > New > Select > URC-8910
2) Add the upgrade from KM
3) Select File > Export to WAV > Upgrades
4) Select a location and enter a name for the file
5) Put the URC-8910 into UPGRADE mode *
6) Play the WAV file.

To put the URC-8910 into upgrade mode:
1) Press and hold the SET button, screen reads CODE SET
2) Press UP ARROW, screen reads UPGRADE
3) Press SELECT, screen reads DOWNLOAD
4) Now play the WAV file.

I was reading the document you pointed me towards and I get everything it said except when you go back into IR and paste the device upgrade code into the protocol section in IR. I do that but the protocol id doesnt show up automatically below. I went looking for it and I believe that it is 0162 but when I enter 0162 in that box it tells me it is wrong or invalid.

Yes, Java is installed and updated.
Actually now when I export to wav it "acts"as though it has saved the file to my desktop but no upgrade.wav file ever appears.
I appreciate your help greatly.

Wondering why the upgrade file is the same size as the full image when exporting to wav? Is it supposed to be that way? Also, I can export to wav but when the file is played the remote blinks the light but never gets upgraded. Ultimately it sits there and listens to the whole wav file and then errors out when its over.

That usb jp1 cable is starting to call my name. I have played that annoying wav file so many times I know it by heart.

I'm having a hard time following as the following two statements appear to be mutually exclusive...

ok, starting over here. Here is the process from the beginning. I downloaded the directv text file and load into KM. then I copy and paste the device upgrade code into IR under devices. after that I copy and paste the protocol code into IR under the protocols section. once this is all done I got to file\export to wav\upgrades and save it to a dir I created under C:\Remote.

here is where it all goes wrong. once the file is there I run it in a media player of my choosing and put the remote into download mode. the file is approximately 90 seconds long. I make sure that the remote has entered download mode before I start playing the file. every time I run it the remote responds with the red blinking light and once the file is finished playing it just errors out and exits the setup.

I hope this properly explains what is happening. I think what I may do is put a link up to a screenshot of KM and IR so that anyone can look at it and see what may be the problem. Thanks.

Here's a better idea, please post a copy of both your IR file and the WAV file in the Diagnosis Area (and post a link to them here). That way, one of us can verify whether we can load your WAV into one of our URC-8910, URC-9910 or HTPro remotes. If the WAV file loads OK, it would tend to imply that the modem is broken in your 8910. This is a common problem that is easily fixed. The modem is just a coil of wire on a white plastic spool. This spool is held in place by hot glue. This glue hardens over time and becomes brittle, and eventually cracks letting the spool break free. The two ends of the wire coming from the spool are soldered to the PCB, and the wire is extremely fine. If this wire breaks, the model will no longer work. You can usually tell is the modem has broken free because the remote will rattle.

To fix it, you need to open the remote, re-glue the spool and re-solder the two ends of the wire.

If your WAV file doesn't load, we can compare it to your IR file to see where you went wrong.
