update on my learning curve.....
Hi guys, finally got the dvd button onto my 9800 on the amp button, moved it over to the tuner, works fine, thanks. Took your advice, shelled out the $17 for the 8810. Trying to use KM to get my Kenwood video3 button working on it, using "video3 NEC1, 184.3, OBC 31, EFC 248". Every time I change the EFC, the OBC changes, and vice versa, in the functions tab, for the "Kenwood VR receivers.txt" file, the 31 and 248 settings don't seem compatible. What gives?

If you open this file using KM, you will see that VIDEO3 is included. Just for future reference, this command is NEC1, device code 184.3, OBC 29, EFC 248.

If you look at Rob's last post, you will see that he was trying to show you your error (at least an obvious one - there may be others). His quoted post says video 3 is OBC 29/EFC 248, yet you are attempting to make it OBC 31/EFC 248 - hence your "incompatibilty".
EFC 248 = OBC 29 for this device
Have you tried this function and it fails to work?
It's unclear from your post, as you only state that you couldn't get KM to accept the OBC 31/EFC 248 combination, not whether you actually tried either signal to see if it works.

"downloading the kenwood file with no alterations, I couldn't get it to work".....thought this was clear! Anyway, the program itself revealed the incompatibility, changing these numbers back automatically. I'll try the original file again from scratch, and then post from there. By the way, my receiver is a Kenwood vr-209, and a search through these forums proves that this seems to be a persistent issue, so thanks for addressing it again.
Well, now I've taken a step back. The video3 function is included in the Kenwood file, I cleared the number buttons in KM and put all the receiver component options on those keys (cd, phono, video1, etc.). It gives a devcie code for the remote as 1206, with amp as the choice. I've tried keeping the 1206 on receiver and on aux, changing it to the device code 1313 (my receiver's device code) and put that on receiver and on aux. The best I get is no change after the upload, the remote retains the original 1313 setup, video3 is never functional. Now what? By the way, the EFC and OBC inputs I suggested in earlier posts were from the setup code library, a preface for setup code 0313.
If you'll post your IR and KM/RM files in the Diagnosis Area, we can look and see exactly what you've done. Don't forget to post a link to your files here after you've uploaded your files.

When I load the Kenwood VR Recievers upgrade into KM, and change the remote to URC-881x/801x/601x KM shows that a protocol upgrade is needed in addition to the device upgrade. You haven't installed that protocol upgrade.
Also, since you are no longer limited to 50 byte device upgrades, you don't have to use keymoves to map all your functions to the desired keys. You can do that directly in KM, and then just assign the setup code to the desired device button.
In your IR file, you haven't assigned the AUD/1206 setup code to a device, and the keymoves that use that setup code are only assigned to the Menu, Info, Exit, Phantom1, Phantom2, and Phantom3 keys. And none of those keymoves are the hex for the video3 functions ($3f 47).
If you assign the AUD/1206 setup code to the AUX button, then in AUX mode the 3 key will send the video3 command.

Another interesting thing is that when I load the Kenwood VR Recievers in RM instead of KM, and change the remote to URC-881x, it switches to the PID 00 b6 version of the NEC1 Combo protocol, which is builtin on the URC-8811 and therefore doesn't require a protocol upgrade at all. The device upgrade itself is also one byte smaller, because there is only one byte of fixed data instead of two.
