JP1 Remotes

I have an 8811 which works, out of the box, with neither of my Dish Network Receviers, one of which is an Echostar Model 4000, the other a later model JVC. This, despite the fact that the manual includes satellite device codes for both makes. The remote can, however, successfully learn codes to control them. I get the impression, after scanning the forums and docs, that there might be some history regarding these devices (an erroneous protocol, perhaps?). When I examine learned commands in IR.EXE, it indicates the "dishplayer (old)" protocol (for the JVC, anyway). Can anyone shortcut me to the relevant info, if it exists?

Also, is there a document that contains background info about ERCs, OBCs, Protocols, Upgrades, Extensions, etc.? I'm slowly putting the picture together, but it's taking a lot of time scouring the docs, spreadsheets and source to piece together the answers. Matters are made more complicated by the fact that I don't have Excel, and the Java alternative does not seem to be usable yet, at least not for my remote.

My gratitude and admiration to the members of this forum who have created the tools and docs to customize these remotes. I have every expectation that, once I assemble the appropriate details, I'll be able to use them to extract far more functionality from this remove than would have been, otherwise, possible.

Turns out the sub-device value, in IR parlance, was 2 for my remote. RM calls this parameter "unit", which caused me some bit of confusion. Why the difference in terminology? How many values for sub-device do various dish network receivers use? Why would it ever be changed?

My problems with RM were due to a wrong RDF file. I was trying to use the set of RDFs that looked like they were supposed to work for both IR and RM.

IR's terminology is limited, it just calls things "device codes" and "sub-device codes". KM and RM, on the other hand, have the ability to customise the labels based on the protocol at hand. Typically the second device code is also called sub-device code in both KM and RM, but when it is known to be a code that is used to differentiate between identical devices, it's called a "unit code"
