I have a Radio Shack 15-2104 that I successfully programmed using a JP1 cable about a year ago. I recently got some new equipment and tried to reprogram it. Now I get an error when I try to upload using IR.EXE saying something to the affect that the remote id does not match the remote id in IR.EXE. If I try to downlaod the remote to IR.EXE, it says the remote can not be identified and only downloads the raw data. When I look at that, the first 3 bytes are 00 indicating that the first byte of the id got clobbered somehow. I tried Magic 981 but no luck. Any other suggestions?

My instincts say that your remote is fine and that the problem lies elsewhere. Have you tried to download with no batteries in the remote. What sort of cable are you using?

I have not tried without the batteries. I will try that later today. The cable is the simple cable that I have used successfully before on this remote and a Radio Shack 15-2117.

That will happen if you are trying to upload a configuration for a different model remote. If you ignore the error and upload anyway, chances are good that the remote won't work at all and will need a full reset.

Robman,

Thanks for the help. I successfully restored my remote by doing the upload without batteries. One more question, if I upload different protocols or extenders can I always get back to the original factory setup by uploading the original settings from IR? In other words, when you upload to the remote I assume everything is over written and nothing is permanently written to the remote.

If you save the current config file, you can always use it to restore the remote to the way it is now, and yes, all we're doing here is writing data to the EEPROM, which can always be over-written.
