The assembly language. The Motorola assembly is so much easier than the lanuguage used in the Samsung chips. The Samsung is backwards when I compare it to every computer language I speak, and its so complicated with the W and R registers and has a lot of rules that are hard to come to grips with.

Add to that, the Motorola chips have a bigger buffer for the IR signals, so you can set up a complex signal with more fixed data with ease, and I'd have to say its too bad that the JP1.2 remotes have left the scene.

That's because, since the beginning, Motorola engineer were programmers.
And that's why the Amiga got immediately so much good quality software.
680x0 assembler was great compared to other CPUs at the time.

The 7960 is really nice looking. Does anybody know what interface does it have? In the chart there is only the 7950 which is jp1.3

I don't think anyone has answered this question. The URC-7960 is a JP1.4 remote. I don't think there is any chance of an extender being written for any JP1.4 remote in the near future, if at all. I have one for testing and thought of using it "for real", but I cannot make it as useful or convenient as my trusty URC-7781 (with my extender, of course ). Before you get one, read this thread to check out views and info about it.

'Button action' is a crude judgement of the prominence/recession and feel of the buttons.

Atlas is the only one here which does not 'learn'.

7781 has an interesting timed macro facility. It also has a small screen which requires left and right arrow buttons for device selection. However, this is simply a nuisance unless can use JP1 to get round it.

Even for RCRP05BR, in the first full configuration controlling 5 devices without extender and with fairly basic moves and macros, there was one physical button spare and 2bytes left unused in the moves/macro space.

For us, only RCRP05B scrapes by for macro space while 7950 has twice as much, and has the largest buttons.

RCRP05B can do DSMs without an extender but 7950 is straightforward to program with JP1, and has the best IR range when held at an angle.

Thanks for the answer. I'm not planning buying a new remote. I use device default remotes and my TVs and BDs are all wifi-remote enabled. I can control them from my iPad or my pc.

But as I said I love to learn new things.

These are the few JP1 remotes we tried:

Atlas is the only one here which does not 'learn'.

There is a learning version of the Atlas 1056B01. I use 2 of them (with extender, of course!)

(Although, to be fair, they are next to impossible to find. Haven't seen one on eBay in over a year.)

Button action on the Atlas improves greatly with time. They are very stiff out of the box.

It's JP1.2. Only has 5 device keys, but supports 8 devices internally. There is an extender available. It has learning (I think disabled with the extender.)

It's optimized for the Comcast DVR (by Motorola) and even has an 'OnDemand' key. It comes with the Cable button pre-programmed for that.

The RCA RCRP095B is a JP1.3 or I'd be on it like a duck on a junebug!

I did get the number wrong. For most end users, it's either JP1 or JP1.x as far as interfaces go.

My own 67100s are not backlit, and printed below the keys is "NS-RC01G-09", in the battery compartment: 67100BA1-003-R A093602

I am quite satisfied with the 7781.
+: Excellent extender available (thanx to Graham)
-: If not using the extender, can be annoying to select device through the --> and <-- arrows
+: 13 devices (despite the name), "only" 12 if using the extender
+: many keys
-: not quite optimally arranged, in particular the transport keys
+: looks ok
-: .... unless you are sensitive for finger prints...
+: works fine with rechargeable AAA NiMH batteries
+: backlit
-: lcd display fairly useless (too small, only device selected, and clock).

I got myself a 7781. It has a good haptic, nice button feeling. I agree with most of these points. Interesting that the extender will make switching devices via -> buttons easier. But more important problem is, that it doesn't have enough keys. Just to mention some usual functions of devices:
Eject, Repeat, Zoom, Time, Display, Audio, Program.
I know there's the convention to have eject on "Guide", but the printings on the remote could be more explanatory, for multi-use of buttons. Then I have some AV-Preamps with around 10 input selectors I don't know where to put those. Then in Europe only few devices are using the 4 color buttons, none of them uses ABCD buttons. So having my custom functions on the 4 colors + 4 ABCD brings too much headache even for me using lot of custom stuff, but never easy to use for other persons in the family

I typically don't put these on buttons that the user presses. I always set up "activity" buttons - for example, "Watch DVD"My macros that fire for these activities use the discrete input commands for any necessary device. I usually put the input discretes on shifted number buttons, since they are only used withing macros, never by the user.
