Trying to upgrade an Scienfic Atlanta ER1 Remote

I have a JVC Av36D201 TV and a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 3200 cable box. The cable box came with a SA ER1 3 button remote. The SA remote is programmed with cbl code 0891, TV code 0067, and VCR code 0176. Don't use the VCR, but the cable box and tv both work fine with the ER1 remote. There is one function on the JVC TV remote called input (changes the tv input from video 1, 2, & one other) that I would like to add to one of the buttons on the SA ER1 remote. I have learned the input button code through a learning remote with the following data " Protocol: JVC; Device:3; OBC:19; Hex Cmd: 37; and EFC:123. I have defined a function for the ER1 remote in RM 1.76 called input and entered the Protocol, OBC, Hex Cmd and EFC data mentioned above. I have tried to assign the function to either the "bypass" button or the "fav" button in RM 1.76, using TV as the device and 2001 as the device code. I have copied the resulting upgrade code into IR7.03 Beta that has the downloaded data from the ER1. However, I get the error "List Index out of Bounds". After uploading, the programmed button doesn't provide the input function. Am missing something here but I can't figure out what. Any help appreciated.

If I understand your description correctly, what you are trying to accomplish is to have the TV input function assigned to the bypass or fav buttons, without changing the functions of other buttons. Normally, we would suggest using a keymove to assign that function to a button, but the ER1 is a very crippled JP1 remote, and it cannot execute keymoves (even though the JP1 tools can load them into the remote).
Another problem with the ER1 is that it is very cable-centric, and most buttons operate the cable device even when you have pressed the TV button first. This is probably one reason why your TV/2001 upgrade did not work as expected. The only buttons that operate the TV device are TV (i.e., power), and optionally with VPT settings, the volume/mute buttons. However, an undocumented mode exists that will let you set the TV/VCR button to the TV device (Setup-989-TV). You can also set this option on the General tab within the IR program.
In order to make use of this mode, you would have to make your TV/2001 upgrade assign the TV input function to the TV/VCR button, and also re-create the TV power and volume functions (if you need them). Then make sure that you actually assign the TV/2001 upgrade to the TV device on IR's General tab after you've uploaded the upgrade into the remote. If you attempt to assign TV/2001 on the remote itself, remember that the setup codes on this remote are offset by -14, so you'd need to assign TV/1987.

This remote only requires a 3 digit device code (although the code is listed as a 4 digit code in IR). I was wondering if that would make a difference. I don't understand the significance of the device code in RM. Does it make a difference what code I use? I thought it simply had to be away from the range of codes used by OEMs. I'll try your suggestion and see how it works out.

Tried the 1987 device code set-up for the input command and it works like a charm. Thanks for the advice and guidance.

Yes, it makes a difference. Internally, the remote will recognize 4-digit setup codes, but I don't think you can select them on the remote itself.

There is no real significance; you are free to choose any setup code number you like between 0 and 2047. However, it will replace any built-in setup code of the same number, so you would want to avoid clobbering any that you are using. In the case of the ER1, with it's code offset of -14, I'm not sure how you would enter setup codes less than 14 on the remote itself.

Glad it worked out OK. (A better solution would be to get a less-crippled JP1 remote!
