My new laptop does not have a parallel port. Would a usb to parallel adapter work with with my parallel JP1 cable?

I highly doubt it. We have USB cables now.

Really, not a chance, I am attached to my JP1 cable, it was my first solder project. For $15 it would be a cheaper option for those of us with parallel jp1 cables to upgrade to USB

Can't be done. The USB port is a strictly high speed serial comm port, whereas the parallel port interface uses just a few of the pins to "bit bang" data to and from the remote's EEPROM in I2C format at relatively slow speed. It's apples and oranges.
