Extending IR control through the internet.

Has any one tried to connect a IR to serial adapter into a serial to IP network adapter then our through the IP to serial adapter to a serial to IR adapter.
Or has anyone used the IR of a laptop to control a device.
I am trying to control a device in another location via the net using the remote control that came with the device.
