Howdy:

New toys for Xmas (yay) means it's time to reprogram the remote. This is usually easy, but this time some things didn't work as anticipated (boo), which leads to some questions:

-Is there a method to reset the user programming for a single device and not affect the others?

From what I read here, prefacing the 980 reset sequence with the device key implies that it will only reset the programming for that selected device. By contrast, the OFA manual omits that first device step, and implies that it resets the user settings for all devices.

Before I make an irrevocable change, I just wanted to be certain which case applies.


-Can buttons assigned a function with an EFC be keymoved?

I tried to move a few buttons that were first assigned EFCs, then used the keymove sequence to copy them to another device, but it didn't seem to work.

It appears that to copy buttons with EFCs to another device, a longer procedure (per the 9xx command reference) must be used where both devices are specified at the time the EFC is assigned, in one fell swoop?


-Better guidance on how to set up a device key macro without the aid of a cable?

Again, the OFA manual is kinda vague with regard to how the remote knows which input to select on the secondary device.

Ideally, what I'd like to do is have the TV switch to the internal tuner when I select the TV device on the remote, and accordingly, when I select Cable device on the remote, I'd like to have the TV switch to the input connected to the cable box.

I have discovered the discrete input selection codes for my TV, and what I'm thinking is to assign them to shifted keys under the TV device, then have those activated during the device key macro sequence. Is that possible, or is there a better method?

If you're speaking of erasing EFC's that you might have mapped to particular device, tes:

1. press and hold SET for two blinks
2. enter 9 9 4
3. press device you wish to clear
4. press device key again

No, you can't.

Right, it has to be in done in single operation like so:

1. device the efc is comimg from
2. press and hold SET for two blinks
3. enter 9 9 4
4. tap SET for one blink
5. enter EFC
6. press device you wish to map the efc to
7. press key

Your clarifications helped fill in the blanks that the linked reference guide did not.

However, I'm still uncertain about this procedure in the OFA manual. Though the reference guide states that macros cannot be programmed to the device buttons, this says otherwise:

PROGRAMMING A MACRO ON A DEVICE KEY
In its default state, when you press a device key (e.g., TV) on the One For All 8L Universal Remote Control with Learning (URC-8820 B00), the remote will switch to that selected device. However, you can also program a Macro onto the Device keys to allow for additional functionality. For example, if your devices are connected to a receiver unit, you can program a Device macro to switch the receiver's input to the selected device.

To Program the Device Key Macro
For example, let's assume that your DVD in connected to Input 3 of your receiver.You can program a macro that will switch the receiver's input to input 3 when you press and hold the DVD key.

1. Press and hold SET until the LED (red light) blinks twice, then release SET.
2. Enter 9 9 5. The LED will blink twice.
3. Press the DVD key once.
4. Press the AUD key (to select the receiver)
5. Press digit 3 (for the input), and press DVD (to return control to the DVD key).
6. To save the settings and exit the program, press and hold SET until the LED blinks twice, then release SET.

I'm assuming that in step 5, I would just enter the appropriate key(s), whether predefined or EFC-enabled, to achieve the desired action for the second device.

Perhaps the example they give is what's confusing. I've never come across a receiver that uses numeric keys to select inputs; they use direct selection through discrete keys. How the manual fails to address the background of that key sequence seems unclear to me.

In general you can't create a macro on a device key. The 10820,8820,6820,10820n, 8820n are exceptions to the rule. I think there are a few others as well.

In the UEI world, the upgrades they provide for receiver setup codes almost always use the numbers for the inputs.

I've been trying to put together some example "how to" and I am finding it very very difficult to address the background of key sequences. Its more difficult than you realize, because the AV world is so complex and each user's equipment is going to be totally different.
