Extended a 15-100, now its stuck

Hi all. I recently took the plunge into JP1'ing after purchasing a Radioshack 15-100. I followed Tommy Tyler's instructions for adding a cable to the remote. I also followed Tommy's instructions for creating serial interface. I got everything working and have been uploading and downloading to the remote with no problems. I got ambitious and decided to load the 15-100 extender. I loaded and activated it fine, but missed the step that I needed map the 'Deactivate' function to a key. I did what I think was the right mapping and re-uploaded. After pressing the deactivate key, the LED blinked 5 times as it was supposed to, but then went into some awful state where it just sits and blinks a series of four flashes, then pauses for about a second, then four more blinks. Every element in the LCD is also on.
I then tried to upload the default configuration, but that didn't work either. I tried every function available in IR 8, including 'Clean Upper Memory', 'Initialize to $FF', and 'Initialize to $00'. Nothing was successful at clearing the blinking light. IR never complained about not being able to complete an upload, but I wanted to confirm that my uploads were doing something. So I opened a second IR window to download the remote after trying an upload. It was here that I noticed that the remote contents don't appear to be changing when I upload. So it appears that the remote is stuck in such a way that I can't even upload to it, even though IR doesn't complain about not being able to write. I have tried to do a 981 reset, but that hasn't worked. The manual gives a reset procedure, but it requires going through the menus, which I can't access either.
I also tried fiddling with the batteries. If I take two of the four out, then I am able to get the LCD screen to show a Low Battery message, and if I press and hold Setup, it will prompt to enter a language, but then does nothing more (although the LED stops blinking for all of this).
I am at a complete loss as to what to try next. Any suggestions are appreciated.
