JP1 Remotes

For the past 3 years I have been using a Harmony 680 which has been near perfect as far as controlling my devices the way I want.

Unfortunately the build quality is awful and it has been slowly disintegrating for the past 2 years and is nearly unusable.

I had remembered reading this forum a couple years back and I have an old RCU810 that has been of no use since I moved to Thailand.

So after lurking the for the last week and seeing all the great things a JP1 remote could do I ordered up a JP1 Cable.

For the last day I have been familiarizing myself with the IR and RM software and as I came to understand the software better I see that my remote may not support all the features I was hoping to use.

It look like I may not be able to use Long Key presses, is that right?

I would like to at least set up the remote so I could hit 1 button (say SAT) to tun on my TV, My receiver, My sat Box, Switch my TV to AV1 and Switch my Receiver to video 1.

Then later hit (say DVD) and have my TV switch to DVI, my Receiver switch to AV2 and my Apple tv just sit there as it is always on.

Switch it all back by hitting the SAT button

Then if I hit the ON.OFF button anything that is on will shut off.

Will that be possible with my remote?

All those things are possible and are pretty typical. I have all my JP1 remotes programmed pretty much the same way as you're proposing. For long key presses, you need to load the EXTENDER. The extender can also handle double key presses, pauses, device specific macros, device multiplexing, and toggle only devices, in case you can't find discrete on/off codes for everything.

I'd put those macros on long key presses of the device keys, and keep the short key presses for picking device modes.

For master off, I'd make that a long key press of power. It would have discrete off commands for all your devices. That one is a little trickier to program. To make it work in every device mode and keep it's original function for short presses, you need to some advanced techniques, like shift cloaking, and you need to make individual macros for every device mode that call the same master power off macro. Post back when you're ready and I can give you more details and examples. It's easy to do, but hard for a beginner to understand.

Make sure you ordered the correct cable. That remote takes the older JP1 cable, not JP1.2 or JP1.3.

While you're waiting for a cable, go ahead and find all the upgrades you'll need for all your devices.

I have a harmony as well. It's easier to program and has labels for all your soft keys, but my JP1 remotes can still run circles around it.

EDIT: I just tried the extender for your remote. It only does multiplexing and device specific macros. The other stuff is typical of many extenders, but not yours, unfortunately. So forget long key presses. I think you can still do everything you want, but using shifted keys instead. So rather than a long press of DVD for your watch DVD activity, for example, you'd use shift-DVD instead (shift is the setup key). In that case, you could probably get by without an extender at all, making the programming a lot simpler.

Thank You for the reply. I know in general JP1s can do LKP, but when I searched for RCU810 and LKP, I came across this Thread https://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewt ... lkp+rcu810 that says there is no support for it. The thread is old but there doesnt seem to be a newer extender than the one mentioned.

If I am mistaken please show me the light.

You are correct, no LKP's. I discovered my error earlier and edited my post. However, you can get by with shifted keys instead. That's what I did before I got into extenders and it worked fine.

Shifted keys are very simple. Basically, just about any UEI remote like your's can have two functions on almost every key. Press the key to get its primary function, or press the setup key first, then the key to get its shifted function. In RM, shifted keys give you who new screen full of buttons when mapping functions to buttons. In IR, it's just a check box (shift). I believe the shift or setup key on your remote is called code search.
