Issue with macros on RCRP05B

I have been using JP1 remotes for some time and thought I had them pretty well figured out, but I am having an issue that I can't figure out.
I have been using the RCRP05B for some time with four devices (TV, 2 DVRs, and BD player) and the fifth device, my AVR, on Audio. I don't use that Audio button for any of the intricate controls of the AVR but essentially just use it for volume controls and switching between devices.
To switch between devices, I have set up 4 macros which are very simple. Basically, the first line is the AUD device, followed by the number key for the device I want to switch to. The final line is to switch to that device.
Recently I started using another device. I thought I could add that device to the AUD button, and then I would put the AVR device onto one of the extra device buttons, since I almost never actually use the buttons on the AVR device. So, in this case I put it on dev4. Doing this, the volume controls work fine, but when I changed the first line of the macros to dev4, none of them work.
So, is there an issue with programming this way? Can you not use one of these phantom devices in a macro? Is there some other way to do what I want, which is essentially to use a sixth device but only as I indicated, to control volume and switching on the AVR?
Thanks for any help.
