That is quite clear and provides useful new information, for me especially the explanation about that any DKP would need to be on the Skip button which I had misunderstood and mis-stated previously, having got things the wrong way round. My only excuse is that I had put the FastFwd keycode on both imaginary buttons so missed that significant point, many thanks.mathdon wrote:...I have just confirmed by experiment that you CAN put three functions easily on the FastFwd and Rewind physical buttons. Simply put a DKP on SkipFwd or SkipBack for the device concerned, and an ordinary function or DSM on FastFwd or Rewind. Then with FastFwd, one quick press sends the SkipFwd DKP single-press macro, two quick presses send the SkipFwd DKP double-press macro, one long press sends the FastFwd function or DSM.
Note that SkipFwd and FastFwd are separate entries in the Keys listing in setting up a Special Function, even though they are the same physical button, and you must do it the way round I said, i.e. the DKP on the Skip button. not the Fast button. For the technically minded, this is because SkipFwd and FastFwd have different keycodes. The remote tests the key hold time and uses SkipFwd keycode for a short press, FastFwd keycode for a long press. With a DKP on SkipFwd, one or two quick presses are therefore both seen as SkipFwd but a long press selects the FastFwd keycode, which never sees the DKP. Note also that an LKP would not work, it needs to be a DKP for this three-function trick....
Choosing my first JP1 remote

No. Device upgrade writers can choose their setup code values, so can the writers of the remote's internal software, but once they have done so, that is fixed. The remote doesn't make random choices. However, many setups are variants of one another so if 2051 also works for your TV then that is fine. In any case, you are about to install 3FG's upgrade, I presume. I wouldn't worry about the change.JezW wrote:The setup code for my TV is 2051, and not 1619 which is what it was on the previous remote. So this number has pretty much been randomly chosen by the remote during the TV setup and just happens to be different this time?

Think of upgrades and built in setup codes like books in a library, all the books have a reference number on them so that the librarian can find them, but the reference number itself probably doesn't tell you anything about the book (like whether it's fiction or non-fiction, etc), it just tells you where it is.
When you are talking about official UEI setup codes, the numbers are meaningful to us because UEI is consistent with their setup code numbers, so amp/1234 in your remote is the same as amp/1234 in someone else's remote.
But, when you're talking about homemade upgrades, the setup code number is completely meaningless and was totally created as the whim of the person creating the upgrade.
When you add an upgrade to your remote, if the setup code number is the same as a built in setup code, the upgrade will take precedence over the built in code. But once it's added, you can think of the upgrade setup code in the same way as any other built in setup code. So, in order to use it, you need to actually assign it to a device button.

Rob, I know you like keeping the forum and threads tidy...so...if you have a spare few minutes, maybe you would consider moving all the posts which are specific to the extender issues to another thread? It would be much easier for myself and other newbies to navigate through the questions I asked previously and the responses
Only if it takes you a few minutes though

Looks like someone else has been deleting posts, because my reply to you is also missing now.JezW wrote:Rob, I know you like keeping the forum and threads tidy...so...if you have a spare few minutes, maybe you would consider moving all the posts which are specific to the extender issues to another thread? And isn't this whole thread pretty much about the extender?
I have split the extender problem posts to the following thread:

It's generally best to leave posts like that "as is" while the thread is still active, and then do a clean up after the fact if you think it will help make the thread easier to read, otherwise people see their posts disappear, sometimes while they're in the process of replying to one of them, and it causes confusion.mdavej wrote:Just trying to erase the whole accidental edit exchange. Ha, about half of it. I'll just get programming and browse through when I get stuck. The Robman wrote:And isn't this whole thread pretty much about the extender?
My Flirc dongle has arrived now too so I've lots to do
Here's a question guys -
Can you give me some examples of macros that you have on your remotes, and which buttons you use for them?
I've got a few ideas of what I'd like but would also like some inspiration

My remote is the 15-1994 that you see on the front page of this site. I have macros on each of the shifted device buttons that starts that "activity", so shift/CBL is my "ReplayTV" device activity, shift/VCR is my "VCR" activity, shift/AUX2 is my "DVD" activity, etc. Shift/POWER turns everything off.JezW wrote:Can you give me some examples of macros that you have on your remotes, and which buttons you use for them?
This remote also has 4 "learning" buttons (the 1s - 4s "smart keys"). I use 2s and 3s to switch between stacked devices (I have 2 ReplayTVs, 2 DVDs, 2 VCRs). 1s selects the right audio input for the device mode that you are in.

Not at all. In TV mode it has one code, in CD mode it has another, etc.JezW wrote:That sounds like an IF statement? The Robman wrote: 1s selects the right audio input for the device mode that you are in.
If you want to see it, download this RDF and save it in the RDF folder:
https://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... e_id=13704
Then here is my file:

I downloaded the first file and put it in the RDF foler (Copy and replace).
Downloaded the second file and tried to open it with RMIR but it produces an error "Remote Load Error" with a long list of errors...
But some good news now!
I've created a Shift TV macro which turns on my TV (discrete code), turns on my sky box (discrete code), pauses for 4 seconds and then changes to HDMI1.(discrete code). The phantom buttons are very useful.
I'm getting there
Thanks again to everyone for your help.

Oh right, sorry, you need the latest version of RMIR, which hasn't even been officially released yet. Graham updated it just so my file would open using RMIR. (I used IR.exe to create it).

4 seconds is a very long pause for a macro, in practice do you think you will be willing to sit there holding the remote while you wait for the macro to finish?
