That's what I surmised from playing with the RM device files here, and from various forum topics.

No response, unfortunately. Strangely, though, the PBO has been known to unintentionally power on in response to signals from a Comcast 1067 remote sent to a Motorola cable box. I've had it happen, though not consistently.

To sum up, if I acquire a x820N remote, will it have the capability/device code in stock form to do what I need, with no further modifications necessary aside from assigning some EFCs?

Yes the 8820N can control it. See this thread for the various EFCs and setup code.
