It's a serial cable. It's the same design as the DIY cables and it has wire 5 cut.

I remember having these same errors, and just can't remember what the fix was. Typically for me, its batteries because I keep a near dead set around for one of my JP1 remotes, but I've also had a software issue.
I've tried a bunch of ways to get IR to spit out that error again, but its just not going to puke.
I'm assuming Rod downloaded the whole IR package, including the JP12Serial.DLL, but there was a bad DLL out there for a very short time about 2 years ago. I couldn't read my JP1.2 remotes. It was fixed right away so this should not be an issue, but if Rod had previously downloaded it and didn't over write it.....

Rod,
Hang in there buddy and we'll figure this out. The only thing that can beat us is if you run out of patience.
I know it may sound like I'm distracted, but I'm stuck on the scrolling thing. It gives us a problem deciding if the interface is faulty, because we have a standoff between jp1xtest and Debug_Tester. I believe you when you say it just keeps scrolling, but I have never heard of that, and can't imagine what could cause it. I would like to make sure your copy of jp1xtest isn't corrupted somehow. There are a couple of options. One would be for you to download a fresh copy. Another would be for you to send a copy of what you're using to my e-mail address (which I sending you via PM). If we can just get BOTH those test programs to validate your interface, then we can quit picking on the interface and look elsewhere.
Hold off on buying the resistors and lets take one step at a time.

Hi Rob,
I was able to run the program with no problems, thank you, I will send you the results.
Seems like everything is working fine.

Those results show that there's nothing wrong with your interface. There must be something squirrely with your copy of jp1xtest. When you say "Seems like everything is working fine.", does that now include upload and download with IR, or is there still a problem there?
No Change

Hey Rod,
I just noticed that you are using an out of date version of IR, the current version is 7.15, and one of the changes was to update the jp12serial.dll driver to version 0.10, so give it a try just in case it is an out of date jp12serial.dll that is causing your problems.

Thanks for the help and suggestions, I downloaded the current version but I am still having the same issues. I am considering getting a USB cable to see if that works.
Thanks again

Error message "data read back is not same as written

Hi,
I'm having a similar problem. I purchased a jp1.2/3 cable from Tommy Tyler. I have a URC 8820 remote and I'm trying to use the A7 extender for it (URC8820ExtA7).
The cable and interface seem to be fine. jp1xtest reports finding a jp1.x compatible remote on com1 with signature 10631063, which seems to be the correct response. The interface check in IR.exe also succeeds. I was able to download from the remote with no errors, and could also upload the same file to the remote with no errors.
When I tried uploading the extender, I got the error "data read back is not the same as written". I first saw this error after adding several device upgrades to the basic extender. I then tried uploading just the extender itself with no device upgrades. This also failed with the error "data read back is not the same as written".
I saw that weak batteries are sometimes a problem. My first attempts were done using 1.2V rechargeable batteries in the remote. I also tried using new 1.5V alkaline batteries, but that didn't help.
I can consistently upload the file that I downloaded from the new remote, but I cannot upload the extender. IR.exe seems to indicate that I have plenty of space left for macros/key-moves and upgrades, so presumably it's not a memory space issue.
In case it matters, I did all this on a linux machine using Wine.
Any suggestions?

I forgot to mention that I was using IR7.14 -- I tried again using IR 7.15 and that solved the problem.

The magic ingredient in IR 7.15 is an updated DLL file. I was hoping this would fix Rod's problem also, but he says it didn't.
