Making an upgrade for Dish VIP722

Post by DBishop »

Hi all,
Not sure if this is in the right forum as it pertains to a device upgrade question. My sister and brother-in-law recently totally changed their home theater system with a new receiver, tv, and dishnetwork sytem. The codes I found in the file section appear to not work with the VIP722 unit they have. I learned a few basic commands from their dish remote to the RS 15-2116 unit they use. I uploaded to IR and it decodes as Dish Network Protocol, Device 0 Subdevice 1. I tested the learned commands and they do function. The EFC values are definately different than the upgrades I found here. My question is how to properly setup RM with these learned signals?

I can't find a place to enter the device and sub-device codes for the Dish Network Protocol. Once Dish Network Protocol is selected it gives a Protocol Parameters Dialog Box showing entries for Device 1 thru 4 and Remote Address 1 to 32. If I ignore that box and leave it blank I can go to the functions tab and start entering the EFC values I learned, but that changes the device area to n/a instead of the 0 it originally contained. Foolishly, I didn't just transfer it and try it that night I was there to see if it would work or not. Now I need to ask you guys if you know my chances for sucess or if I need to add some additional information in the Protocol Parameters box in order to save an additional trip if what I try the first time doesn't work.

TIA,
Dan

I went ahead and tried to put the learned commands into a device upgrade, and without the device and subdevice information it didn't work. I guess I'll download KM and see if it's setup sheet looks any different. I used to use KM when I first started using JP1. If anyone has any other suggestions, feel free to chime in.

Dan could you post your IR file with the learned information in the diagnosis area and post a link here?
Remember to provide feedback to let us know how the problem was solved and share your upgrades.

Tip: When creating an upgrade, always include ALL functions from the oem remote, even if you never plan on assigning them to a button. Complete function lists makes an upgrade more helpful to others.

Hi Vickyg,
Unfortunately, I didn't save the file and the learned codes are on my Sister's remote at their house  I wrote the learned codes down and they are as follows

Button EFC OBC Hex

Guide 160 20 52
Exit 096 18 4A (learned on last key)
Right 033 24 62
Left 161 72 28
Up 097 26 6A
Down 225 30 7A

All showed device 0 subdevice 1 and Dishnetwork Protocol.

I can get a file and post it if necessary later tomorrow.

I did download KM and the information in the Protocol Help tab was informative for using Dish Network. If I understood it, the unit code is the subdevice code + 1 as reported by IR. If I'm seeing it right, that unit code is listed as Remote Address in RM. (Both talk about a value from 1 to 32). And then I would enter 0 for Device 1 on either KM or RM. At least that is what I was going to try for my next attempt.

Made good progress today. KM was key for me in understanding what and where to enter the device and sub-device codes in my upgrade. The DVR button as well as a few of the transport keys are decoding as a different device. I guess that means I'll have to start over using dish combo protocol to get everything working. I'll start reading up on how to set up an upgrade using the combo. I do have a saved IR file with the learned keys that need the different device # that I can upload if necessary later on. I'd need to clean up some notes as to what buttons a couple of the learned keys were mapped to.

I'm pretty sure that the 722 is the same hardware as the 622 with a bigger disk.

not only that, all of the dish boxes uses the same codes and protocols. there are plenty of upgrades in the files sections that work with the dish receivers. i can't remember if there is one there for the 622, but i used one of them to build the upgrade for my 622 and everything works (and there are some hidden codes that I and others discovered in some of those upgrades)

if you can't find what you need, send me a pm with your email and i'll mail you my 622 upgrade that I use with an Atlas and have used with the RCA 15134 and the 15-100

also, if you have tried upgrades from here, make sure that you have the remote address set right. you can either change the remote address to match the one that you use, or you can change the receiver to match the one in the remote.

to change the receiver, turn the power off, push system info, point the remote at it and press the record button. you should see the remote address change on the screen.

Hi unclemiltie,
I started with the VIP622 file from here. Nothing worked for me, but now that you mention the remote address, that may explain why as I didn't know what it was referring to in the RM setup screen and had left it blank. My currently partially working file was setup using KM as it explained where and what numbers to use for the unit code for the Dishnetwork Protocol. My learned commands were showing a device 0, subdevice 1. I plugged in 2 for the unit code according to my understanding of the Dishnetwork Help notes included with KM. I put 0 for the first device in that same setup area and changed the EFC code to match the ones I learned and reloaded to my RS 15-2116 and I had a working start. I've since learned most of the codes and all that use the device 0, subdevice 1 are working fine. The DVR button on the original Dish remote as well as some of the transport keys decode as device 1 subdevice 1, so I'm trying to understand how to get those to work and then I'll have a fully functional upgrade. If I'm understanding the help file included with KM, I need to use Dish Combo. I won't get back to my sister's house to try anything more until next week, so any clarification on if I'm on the right track would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan
