Best new JP1 remote in 2019?

Post by bluto »

Does anyone have recommendations for new JP1 remotes? I have a bunch of RCA RCU810 remotes that I have been using since the 2003. I have bought NOS replacements over the years as they wear out. But now the newest ones that I have are starting to act up.

So I am looking for possible replacement JP1 remotes that can be programmed with 8 devices. Is the URC 7880 the best bet? It looks like they have recently gone out of print but are still available new on ebay.

If suitable 8 device JP1 remotes are not procurable, does anyone have any thoughts on high end remotes like the URC MX-990?

URC 7980 "Smart Control 8" is still available. So are the Inteset 422 (4 device buttons, 8 internal). The OARUSB04G is 4-button but 12 device with easy extender. The RCA RCRP05BR (5 device buttons, 8 internal) seems to be out of production but can still be found new. So can Nevo C2s if you want to pay enough and buy them from Australia.
URC-8820 x2, URC-10820N, Insignia NS-RC05A-11 x2, RCA RCRP05B, Potenza ST ADB, OARI06G, URC-7980, OARUSB04G, Nevo C2 x3, AOC 67100BA1-017-R, onn URC-3660, Insignia NS-RMTSNY17, IRWidget

I'm in Britain, and I found the OARUSB04G on the American amazon.com site, so cheap, that even with postage and import duties, it's cheaper than anything in the UK. Opinions on that and the almost-but-not-quite identical URC6440, vary — between those who use this site, and those who do not!

With RemoteMaster software, it beats the hell out of anything you can get your hands on!

Yes. It's pretty lame out of the box, but quite usable with RemoteMaster and extender.

Thanks for the replies. The Inteset 422 looks pretty cool for $25 and the interface options that they have for streaming devices is intriguing. I went ahead and purchased one to try out. I like that it looks very similar to a cable box remote and the buttons are not on top of each other. If it works well, I will probably but several to have uniformity in each room. And my mom and dad could use a decent universal remote for 3 devices and this seems like it would fit the bill for them too.

To me, the OARUSB04G has the most used buttons (channel, volume, directional, etc.) too close together and hard to use. Ditto on the URC 7880/URC 7980, the directional buttons on those also look to be not user friendly. It looks like those also don't have hard buttons to select which device to use and instead have one button to toggle among devices. I don't think I would like that.

Check ebay for the insignia rmt415, a lot cheap, but lacks backlighting and learning;

The Inteset has been my favorite for years. It's got all the right buttons and ergos and killer extender capabilities.

Graham's work on the OARUSB04G has made it very useful, but it doesn't have enough buttons for my purposes and the ergos and overall operation are awkward and confusing. However I still use them in rooms where I only need a simple remote to control a Roku or something like that.

I'd check ebay or see if Greg ever ported an extender. He was looking for volunteers for testing several years ago but never had any takers.

I'll also check my stash and see if I have any spares I could part with.

Thanks I do not want to go Ebay route for used remotes
because they may be damaged but i probably will anyway
If you have any extra you should probably keep for yourself
the Inteset is a nice remote worth keeping
