Contents

Programming Setup Codes

After getting the proper codes from your manual or Customer Service, use the following instructions to enter them into your remote.

  • TAP the button for the device you want to program, (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.).
  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • ENTER the 4 digit code for your brand.
  • You should receive 2 quick flashes after entering your code.
  • TAP the POWER button to test the code. (For some devices, use PLAY instead)

Searching For Your Setup Code

If you have tried all of the set-up codes for your brand of equipment ,or your brand is not listed, and you are still not able to get the unit to respond, try the following procedure to search for your code. If you don't find a code that works, the remote will flash four times when you reach the end of all the codes for this device type.

  • TAP the button for the device you want to program, (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.), then RELEASE.
  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • ENTER 9-9-1 (two blinks on the remote)
  • ALTERNATE slowly between the POWER key and the DEVICE (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.) button until your device turns off. (On VCR, LD, and CD players use PLAY instead of POWER)
Make sure that the remote is pointed at your device during the search, You may have to TAP this sequences of buttons up to 100 times to search the entire library of codes.
  • When your device turns OFF, TAP the SETUP button and RELEASE it to lock in the code for your device.

Blinking Back the Code

  • TAP the device, (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.), button - RELEASE
  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 9 - 0.
  • TAP 1, carefully COUNT the number of blinks. (1st digit)
  • TAP 2, carefully COUNT the number of blinks. (2nd digit)
  • TAP 3, carefully COUNT the number of blinks. (3rd digit)
  • TAP 4, carefully COUNT the number of blinks. (4th digit)

If the remote DOES NOT blink it means the number is 0.
This is your 4-digit setup code.

Redefining a Device Key

If you wish to use a device key for something other than it's intended purpose, you can change it's functionality. For example, if you have two VCR's but don't have a cable box, you could change the CABLE button to be a second VCR button.

  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 9 - 2.
  • TAP the "from" DEVICE, (ie, the one you are copying from)
  • TAP the "to" DEVICE (ie, the one you want to replace).

Example: If you want the AUX key to be a VCR key:
"SETUP" (2 blinks) 9 - 9 - 2, VCR (you want to copy VCR)
Then AUX (you want to replace AUX).

Resetting a Device Key

Use this procedure to return a device key to it's original function.

  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 9 - 2.
  • TAP the device button twice. - Two blinks.

The device key is now returned to it's original mode.

Setting Up DVD Players

DVD players need to be setup on a "VCR" button, so if you wish to use the AUX1 button (for example) you will need to reassign it to be a VCR button first using the 992 command (see below), then you would assign the device code for you player. If you are using the original Radio Shack manual for device codes, please be aware that the DVD codes are mixed in with the Laser Disc codes. However, the code list on this site lists DVD and Laser Disc codes seperately.

To Program the AUX1 button for DVD:

  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 9 - 2, two flashes.
  • TAP the VCR device button,
  • TAP the AUX1 device button (or whatever device button you would like to use for the DVD player), two flashes.

Volume Punch Through

This sets Volume to work for one device in all modes. For example, the TV volume will work in the cable and VCR modes.

  • TAP the device, (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.), button - RELEASE
  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 9 - 3.
  • TAP the device key you would like the volume to come from.
  • Two blinks.

NOTE #1: This only sets volume in the TV, VCR, CABLE, or SAT mode.
NOTE #2: You can only punch the volume though to the TV.
Remember, if the volume punch through doesn't meet your needs, you can always program the volume controls using KEY MOVES. For instance, if you want the volume controls in CD mode to work your amplifier which is on the AUX button, then you would use the 994 command and move the 3 volume controls from AUX to CD. See the KEY MOVES section for more info.

Restore Volume Default

Use this to get the original volume to work on each device.

  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 9 - 3
  • TAP the VOLUME+ key, you will get two blinks.

Now the volume is set for all original devices.

Using the Sleep Key

The sleep key allows you to access the sleep timer of your original device. If your device has a built-in sleep timer, this will normally be mapped to the SLEEP button of your remote, if your original device does not have abuilt-in sleep timer, the SLEEP button will use the remote's own built-in sleep timer. Refer to the original manual for your device to work it's timer, or use the following instructions to use the remote's built-in timer.

  • TAP the device, (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.), button - RELEASE
  • TAP the SLEEP key once to set the built in sleep timer for 15 minutes.
  • Each additional TAP of the SLEEP key will add 15 more minutes to the sleep timer, up to a maximum of 60 minutes.
  • To deactivate the built-in sleep timer, TAP any key other than SLEEP.

NOTE: Once you have activated the remote's built-in sleep timer, you must keep the remote pointed directly at the component.

Activate the Sleep Key

If the SLEEP button is programmed to work the internal sleep timer of your device, but you would prefer to use the remote's built in sleep timer, you can activate or de-activate it with the following procedure:

  • TAP the device, (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.), button - RELEASE
  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 7 - 0.
  • (Two flashes mean the built-in timer has been activated, four flashes mean it has been de-activated).

Programming Macros

This will allow you do do several functions with just the touch of ONE key. A macro can hold up to 15 keyTAPes.

  • TAP the device, (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.), button - RELEASE
  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 9 - 5, two flashes.
  • TAP the key that you want the Macro to be on
  • TAP the sequence of keys you want the remote to do
  • TAP "SETUP" and wait for two blinks - RELEASE.

When you hit the key you put the macro on it will automatically start the sequence.

NOTE: Some remotes have buttons specially designed to hold macro's, but macro's can actually be assigned to any button, just remember that the macro will be assigned to this button in all device modes. If you placed a macro on a button that you wish to restore to it's original function under certain device modes, you can re-program the button using the advanced codes.

NOTE2: Macros cannot be programmed to the device buttons, the SETUP button, SLEEP button, or the FAV/SCAN button.

How To Use The SHIFT button

It is possible to store two commands on one button by using the SHIFT key, the SETUP button acts as a shift key on these remotes. During the process of programming individual buttons, whether by learning or by using advanced codes, if you TAP SETUP before selecting the button where the command will be assigned, the function will be stored on the shifted version of the button. Then when you wish to use the button, TAP SETUP before you TAP the button. Shifted keys can be used for learned commands, commands programmed using advanced codes and for macros.

Using shifted buttons is a very good idea for macros as macros are effective in all device modes. If you program a power macro (ie, one that will either turn everything on, or turn everything off, you might want to program this macro to the shift/POWER button.

NOTE: Shifed numeric keys: You can program functions to shifted numeric keys using the procedure outlined above, but in order to actually use the shifted function you will need to TAP the SETUP button twice before TAPing the numeric key that holds the shifted function, otherwise the remote thinks you are about to enter an advanced code.

Channel Scan

Channel Scan lets you scan through all available channels on your TV, VCR, or cable converter, stopping at each for about 3 seconds.

NOTE: Channel scan does not operate if favorite channel scan is programmed for any device. See "Favorite Channel Scan", below.

TAP the device key (TV, VCR, CBL, etc). Aim the remote at your device and TAP SCAN. The remote scans through the available channels.

NOTE: The remote must be pointed at the device the entire time you use channel scan. To stop scanning, simply TAP any key on the remote.

Setting Up Favorite Channel Scan

Favorite channel scan lets you set up your remote to scan through up to 10 preselected channels, stopping at each for about 3 seconds.

NOTE: Favorite channel scan can only be set up for one device. Once favorite channel scan is set up for a device, you must clear it before you can use channel scan for any other device.

Note: You can only maintain a favorite channel list for one device at a time. You cannot set up a favorite channel list for another device until you clear the existing list.

TAP the device key for the device you want to scan (TV, VCR, etc).

  • Hold down SETUP until the red light blinks twice.
  • Type 9-9-6, two flashes.
  • Enter the first channel number you want to include in your favorite channel list, then TAP SETUP.

Notes: Precede a single-digit number with a 0. For example, 0 1, 02, and so on.

If you enter a three-digit number, you do not need to TAP P after entering the number.

If you use an ENTER key to directly access channels on your original remote, TAP ENTER after you enter the last digit of a channel.

Repeat the last step for up to 9 other channels you want to include in your list, then hold down SETUP until the red light blinks twice.

Using the favorite channel scan

To scan through your favorite channel list, TAP the appropriate device key, point the remote at your device, then TAP SCAN. The remote control repeatedly scans through the favorite channel list, stopping on each channel for about 3 seconds.

TAP any key when you see a channel you want to watch. Scanning stops.

Copy One Key To Another

  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 9 - 4.
  • TAP the DEVICE and the FROM button
  • TAP the DEVICE and the TO button - two Blinks

EXAMPLE: To take the volume from a TV and put it in the VCR mode, it would be: SETUP - 9 - 9 - 4 -TV - VOL UP - VCR- VOL UP - two blinks. You would have to do the same process for VOL DOWN and MUTE.

NOTE: To assign as advanced code to a 'shift' key, simply TAP SETUP before TAPing the key in step 4 above.

NOTE2: Functions cannot be copied to the device buttons, the SETUP button, SLEEP button, or the FAV/SCAN button.

Assigning Advanced Codes

  • TAP the device, (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.), button - RELEASE
  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 9 - 4.
  • TAP the SETUP button and then the three digit advanced code.
  • TAP the button you wish to use for that function - Two Blinks.

NOTE: To assign an advanced code to a 'shift' key, simply TAP SETUP before TAPing the key in step 5 above.

NOTE2: Advanced codes cannot be programmed to the device buttons, the SETUP button, SLEEP button, or the FAV/SCAN button.

Learning Functions

If there is a botton on your original remote that is not present on your universal, or the button on the universal does not function properly, you can learn the commands from your original remote. There are four buttons specially assigned for learning (the four 'S' or 'L' buttons) but you can actually learn to any button on the remote (except SLEEP, FAV/SCAN and the device keys).

Line up your original remote and the head-to-head before completing the following steps.

  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice.
  • TAP 9 - 7 - 5, the red LED will flash twice.
  • TAP the DEVICE key where you wish to learn the function.
The next 3 steps must be completed within 10 seconds.
  • TAP the button that will receive the learned function, the LED will flash radidly.
  • TAP the button on the original remote to be learned.

Now you can repeat steps 3 through 5 to learn other functions onto other keys or PRESS and HOLD SETUP until the remote's red light flashes twice to lock in your new feature. (If the red light does not blink twice, stop and repeat steps through 6).

To test the new feature, TAP and release the device key in which the new feature was learned followed by the key on which the feature was learned.

NOTE: To learn to a 'shift' key, simply TAP SETUP before TAPing the key in step 4 above.

Clearing Out Any Button On The Remote

  • TAP the device, (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.), button - RELEASE
  • PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 9 - 4
  • TAP the button you want to clear twice. - Two blinks.

NOTE: To deleted a 'shift' key, TAP SETUP between the two TAPes of the button that you want to clear.

EXAMPLE: To clear shift/play in VCR mode:

  • TAP the VCR device button - RELEASE
  • PRESS and HOLD SETUP until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  • TAP 9 - 9 - 4
  • TAP PLAY - RELEASE
  • TAP SETUP - RELEASE
  • TAP PLAY - RELEASE - Two blinks.
