Easy-to-Find Components:
These components are usually in stock at Radio Shack, however they are much cheaper almost anywhere else. At a good surplus shop, the total cost of these would be about $2.

- DB25 (PC Parallel Port) Connector:
If you want to put everything in a project box, it is easiest to use a PC panel mount cable assembly. Most computer stores that build or repair PC's have these. It is a short (3-12 inch) ribbon cable with a DB25-female connector on one end and a 26 pin (2 x 13 holes) box header socket on the other end. Typical price is $2.50 - $5.00.
- 26 pin (2 x 13 holes) Box Header:
This solders to the pc board and connects to the box header socket on the parallel port cable assembly. You can use a larger breakaway header with 0.1 inch (2.54 mm) pin spacing. Just break off the extra pins. (You can use the 910-1530 part mentioned above for this, but it's only available from Radio Shack on-line, it's not in the stores). If you have the Cinema 7, you can also break off a 6-pin connector from this strip to solder onto the remote itself to enable you to use the upgrade box.
- JP1 (6-pin) Connector:
It is hard to find a 6 pin (2x3) socket. I've only found them in electronic surplus shops. The PC panel mount cable assembly described above usually comes with both a parallel port (DB25) and serial port (DB9) cable assembly. The serial cable assembly is a short (3-12 inch) ribbon cable with a DB9 connector on one end and a 10 pin (2 x 5 holes) box header socket on the other end. Cut off the DB9 connector, leaving no more than 6 inches of ribbon cable. Cut or grind off the extra pins on the 10-pin socket so it will fit the opening in the remote. Keep the pins on the side of the ribbon cable with the stripe, so you can use the stripe as a reference for which pin is pin 1.
- 25-Conductor Serial Cable with DB25 Male to Male Connectors:
25-Conductor Serial Cable wired straight through, usually used for switch boxes. You can use either the 3 foot version (Radio Shack part# 950-0200) or the 6 foot version (Radio Shack part# 950-0201).
- The Project Box:
The 27-1801 box from Radio Shack will suffice for experts, but beginners might want to get the larger 27-1803 box for this project.Electronics / Soldering Tips:

WARNING: Once you have built this box, please take great care to connect the remote correctly. It is very easy to either get the connector upside down, or off by a pin, which would fry the remote!
