JP1.x serial interface - works on one PC, not on other

JP1.x serial interface - works on one PC, not on other

I am hoping to set up a remote away from my desktop PC. I have a laptop with a serial port and I'm testing with the same cable and same remote as my desktop.

Everything works fine on the desktop, but the laptop gives me "Failed to open JP1.x interface." Also, I get "NO JP1.x COMPATIBLE REMOTE FOUND" from jp1xtest. Every time I test the connection the remote blinks twice so something is getting through.

I've tried moving the serial port from COM1 to COM2 in the BIOS and many reboots... always the same result. Any other ideas what I can do to fix this?
