win vista x64 and ir.exe

Post by vdubuclet »

I am running Win Vista Ultimate 64 bit version. Using IR version 7.11. When I try to set the parallel port HEX address to 3BC (device manager says LPT3) I get a privileged instruction error. When I tried to download from the remote or check interface I get the same error. I am trying to use a simple interface parallel cable. I purchased a parallel card to add to my new PC as it did not come with one on board.

I also have seen the following error on startup.

Unable to initialize drivers for any JP1 device.

Parallel/Serial error
Problem with NT prot driver
Starttdriver: Unable to start service
THis driver has been blocked form loading. Please make sure you have Admin rights

I am logged on as an administrator and I have tried right clicking on ir.exe and selecting run as administrator with no luck.

Thanks for the help.

Vista x64 protects the system by stopping any unsigned device driver from working. In addition there is also the 32/64 bit issue around the device driver.

The only way I have got around this is to run IR on a virtual PC within Vista x64 i.e. make use of VMWare or similar. Within this virtual PC, you can run XP with a serial, parallel, USB ports and hence are able to use any of the cables.

For those having trouble running IR.exe in Vista or Win 7 (getting "Privileged instruction" errors when trying to access ports), run in Win XP SP2 compatibility mode.

Version 7.11 of IR.exe has been obsolete for quite some time. The current version is IR 8.02. Please download that, as your experience will only be of use to others if it relates to the current version.

Remember to provide feedback to let us know how the problem was solved and share your upgrades.

Tip: When creating an upgrade, always include ALL functions from the oem remote, even if you never plan on assigning them to a button. Complete function lists makes an upgrade more helpful to others.
