There is a cable here that seems like it'll work for the JP1.2/JP1.3 remotes as we only need Rx,Tx,RTS,Gnd. I've seen mention of a bitbang mode using the ftbb program. The USB chip(FT232RQ) inside this cable goes for about $3-4. use of this chip/cable would obviate the need for a RS232 converter.

Another chipset that seems to be in the same class as the FTDI chips is the Silabs CP2102.

There is another popular USB-serial chip called the Prolific PL2303

I have a Cell phone cable that has one from ARK Micro (an ARK3116 I think) , but I can't seem to find the RTS line.

You don't specifically need the RTS line. Any outgoing line like DTR is ok as well. I'm thinking these USB-TTL chips should allow us to build a cable that can handle JP1,JP1.X remotes.

Well, whatever signal it is, this cell phone cable doesn't have it on the board (the chip is a C.O.B, with a few outputs, I found the inputs though).

As for commercially producing a USB JP1x cable with one of those USB serial chips, it won't happen, for two reasons:

1. For the small market they will be made for, it would be uneconomical, as a whole, to build a few thousand even. The market is tight enough, I suppose for aa regular JP1.x cable, which is more universal, and works with nearly any of the USB serial adapters on the market, which don't sell for much to begin with.

2. It would have to likely have to meet EMC requirements, which in itself has certain costs associated with it.

Just for curiosity, do you have any driver for the ARK3116 chip?
I also have a cell cable with this chip, but can't seem to find any support...
