Possible repair for a Pioneer VXX2963 remote

Not sure where to start on this one.
The dvd is not responding to some commands from the remote.
I have cleaned the pads and board carefully.
How do i first go about testing the remote to ensure it is putting out the right signal?
Can my IR port on my laptop with some type of software capture the signal?
Would the codes be available to check
If it is the remote i suppose i need to get one to replace it.
If it is not the remote are the dvds unit able to be programmed again?
The unit is a Pioneer DVR 530H.
I hope this was the right area for this problem

Do you have a digital camera or camcorder? If so, look at the remote through the camera's viewfinder, if the remote is working you should be able to see the IR-LED light up when you press a button.

If the remote is broken, why not simply program your JP1 remote to work the DVD player?

The problem is my wife is classed as legally blind so she struggles with changes like a new remote as she goes off here memory.
If i was to give her another remote that would just confuse the whole process.
A mate has a device to see if the remote is sending a signal but it will not confirm if the signal is correct or not

I doubt that an OEM remote would suddenly start sending the wrong signal, unless it's actually also a universal remote itself.

If you want to confirm that the signal is correct, you should learn the signal using a JP1 learning remote and check them in IR.exe.

You can also build a simple ir probe to hook up to your computer and use CaptureIR to read the signal from remotes. I find it much easier than using a learning remote to capture the signals. There's only one component to the hardware, but you may have difficulty finding it down under. See this thread:

Since you have a Dreambox, you might try running the irrecord program that is part of LIRC on the Dreambox to capture the IR signals.
