Extenders and Power

I had dead batteries in my 7800 for the second time since I installed my extender. Normally my batteries last for 2+ years, these are lasting 2 months. However, this is a "new" remote with "vicky soldering" , so it could be a problem with the remote, but I'm thinking that I could have screwed something up when I was adapting the 1994 extender.
Specifically, when I picked up the 1994 extender and transported it to the 7800 I left out some routines to "turn off the light" since the 7800 doesn't have a light. Could this be an issue? Or could my soldering be an issue? Or should I just dig out another 7800?
