I am setting up a MythTV computer system, and I want to get a (inexpensive) remote for it. I saw a thread elsewhere that talked about JP1 remotes, and this intrigued me.
However, I can't find some pretty basic information, though I think it should be easy to find. I did look at the stickied threads and the links therein, but they don't address this. I checked some of the other forums here, but it didn't seem easy to find any of the following information.
1. JP1.1 and JP1.2 what is the difference between these? Are they largely the same or do they require different programs and different interfaces?
2. IR receivers, is it easy to make one for the computer or cheap to buy one? Is incorporating this with LIRC easy?
3. Is there a list of JP1 remotes somewhere? (separated into JP1.1 and 1.2 if necessary?) I've seen some with LCD screens, but I'd like to be able to easily look at all/most of the options. I couldn't find a link or anything to something like this. -- Hmm, the One For ALL website is helpful, are those all of the possible remotes? (Again, the JP1.1/JP1.2 confusion looms in my mind)
4. Can you do reprogramming on linux now? The Beginner's info is a couple of years old, so perhaps this has changed.
5. I read something about an RF/IR system. What's that all about? Can you get that and program in RF signals of any sort, or is it more complicated than that?
Here's the relevant information about me:
I haven't done much work with electronics, but I am pretty sure I could make the connector for reprogramming a JP! remote -- assuming it is easy like everyone says.
I'm a quick learner and have done some programming before, so I don't expect any trouble figuring the programming of a remote.
I'm pretty new to linux, but I did set up an Ubuntu Myth TV system. I've moved everything to a new box with some new hardware, and I am going to set it up again. I don't expect any trouble with this, but I'm not familiar with LIRC and my overall linux understanding is currently fairly simplistic.
I have access to a couple of windows machines running XP Pro. The one I own, a laptop, is currently being repaired so I can't use that. So I'd prefer being able to use a fully linux friendly solution.
I have a busy school schedule, so I don't have a lot of time of free time. I don't mine spending it figuring things out or fiddling around with the remote. I just hope the above questions have some fairly simple answers so I don't have to spend time looking for answers to anything basic.
Thank you for reading this and for your input.

1. I think the same serial interface works both.
2. I don't know, I think John Fine does
3. Alain's updated file https://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7819
4. Some Linux work, https://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2895 ,there may well be more.
5. jp1x tools work with the IR side. I don't think RF is supported in any direct way. Some remotes of the 9910 family and 15-2117 (????) have RF. The way it works is that the remote sends signals to a RF box, which sends a IR signal to your A/V gear.
Guess what. Nobody has time

1. There are actually three versions: JP1, JP1.1 and JP1.2
The cable design is similar between JP1.1 and JP1.2, and there is a cable design that covers both JP1.1 and JP1.2 in one cable. JP1 is a totally different cable design.
The same software is used for all three.
2. I think the info available on LIRC sites covers this in great detail.
0. What do you need JP1 for? Maybe I'm missing some important detail of Myth TV. But LIRC is able to learn a set of IR signals. I would think you could get any universal remote you like and program it (without a PC) to some ordinary set of IR signals and then teach that set to LIRC.
This probably isn't the right forum for LIRC questions.
If there is some real use for JP1 in what you want to do, I'm sure you'll find this a very helpful forum once you have real JP1 questions. But you're really restricting the sources of help if you need someone to be a Myth TV expert and a JP1 expert together. You're better off getting enough Myth TV help first so you can ask better JP1 questions (assuming there is some real need for JP1).
