Try software w/o cable or remote?

Will the software (IR, RM, KM) function without a cable and remote connected? I'd like to try it out and see if I can pick things up pretty easily or if it's just too complicated for me.

Thanks!

Absolutely, you can do everything except load the stuff into the remote. Check out the following "how to"

http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/help/

That page describes things from a KM point of view, but there's a link at the top of the page that will take you to the RM version of the page, but the process is pretty much the same either way.

Thanks Rob.

I just ordered an 8910 w/ Sony discretes from you and was planning on using it as a 'middle man' to teach my main remote the discrete codes. Just found out that my cable company's remote is actually JP1, too. Now I'm thinking of giving the programming a try but wanted to familiarize myself w/ the software first.

Just FYI, I am planning on doing your programming tomorrow and will get your remote in the mail on Monday morning.

Regarding the cable company remote, which remote is this? The reason I ask is because many of the cable remotes on the market now are actually JP1.x remotes. So, while you can use the JP1 software to program them, you may need a different cable for them than you would for a remote like the URC-8910, which uses a traditional JP1 cable.

Hi Rob, thanks for the update on my remote.

My cable co. remote is the Atlas DVR 5 (w/ 'Settings' button and not the 'Day' buttons). Know if that's a plain JP1 remote, or a JP1.x?

BTW, it says JP1 on the inside.

It's hard to say because they've made the Atlas in just about all flavors, but if it just says "JP1" on the inside, it's probably an old fashioned JP1 remote so it should work with the same as the URC-8910.
