Why are the CC and audio buttons combined for the 6131 remote? Are these really not programmable separately? |

Well, that explains a lot. Why would it be designed this way?
And why is there a CC and a subtitle button? Aren't those really the same thing? |

I've asked them this several times but never had an answer. I totally agree with you. _________________ Rob

Are the holes there just to route the wire, or are some traces cut too? |

There are a couple of traces that need to but cut, as the pic illustrates, but the drilled holes appear to be so you can route the wires across the PCB without interfering with the buttons. _________________ Rob

A friend of mine just answered this question. He used to have a DVD player that had one button to turn of/off subtitles, and another button to cycle through the subtitle languages. |

That's not what it is. The "Closed Captions" button is typically a "TV" button whereas "Subtitles" is a "DVD" button. But at the end of the day, they both put words on the bottom of the screen, so in my view they are essentially the same thing. _________________ Rob
