how to set up a device on a 7800

i am trying to add a direct tv receiver to my 7800.
the device default is cable 1377.
i want to install it to the cd button on my 7800 and have volume punch through.
if i install the device as cable to the cd button, all the functions work except for the volume buttons.
if i change the device to cd and install to the 7800 cd device, volume works but most of the other buttons do not work.
also, when i install it as cable device to the cd button, if i press an unmapped button, the remote locks up.
probably something real basic but i'm lost.
no problem on my 8910 and 6131.
thanks

You may need to post the upgrade and the .ir file to the diagnosis folder to let us completely figure out what is going wrong. But a few comments first:
1) When the device type of the upgrade is different from the default device type of the button (such as a cable upgrade on the cd key) VPT is automatically disabled. That is a designed in feature of the remote. We think that feature is stupid. But OFA did it on purpose.
The usual way around that problem is to give up on VPT for that device mode and instead define three KeyMoves that create the same operational behavior as if VPT worked: KeyMove the v+, v- and mute functions from the TV or amp (whatever you wanted for VPT) to those keys in CD mode.
2) If you redefine the device type of the upgrade, there tend to be consequences that KM or RM cover up with automatically generated KeyMoves. Typically that will add more than three keymoves, so the cost of making VPT work is greater than the cost of simulating VPT via three keymoves.
But you seem to be describing even worse results from changing the upgrade to CD type. So I have to guess you tried some shortcut in IR for changing the upgrade type. That won't work. You need to change the upgrade type in KM or RM and reinstall it into IR and have the upgrade type consistent everywhere that it is specified.
3) I'm trying to guess why any of that could lead to the remote locking up. It shoudn't. Does this upgrade require a protocol upgrade as well as a device upgrade? And do you still have learned signals in that device mode? You will usually lock up a 7800 if you try to use a learned signal in a device mode that uses a protocol upgrade. In any case you should delete all learned signals from a device mode in which you want to test a new device upgrade, or you are likely to misnterpret the test results.
4) There are extenders available for the 7800 that give you more flexibility in defining VPT and similar behaviors.

john -- thanks for the response.
i know that vpt doesn't work if if i install a cable device to cd.
that's why i tried to change the device to cd in both km and in ir but it wouldn't work right.
in fact, when i try to install it as a cd device the hex code gets all scrambled.
i will play some more with it this weekend.
on my main computer i cannot download from any remote without getting program errors.
so the answer was to install km and ir on another computer and i will play on that computer this weekend.
keep you posted.
thanks again.

But you can use three keymoves to fix that, which ultimately may be the best solution and at this point is clearly the easy solution.

That's why we have a
diagnosis area
We could ask you questions for days and not figure out what you did wrong and/or whether there is an IR bug in there somewhere.
If we saw the .ir file after you installed that cd upgrade, we would probably have a good guess. If we also saw the .txt file saved from km for that upgrade we'd be more likely to understand, and if you also throw in the .ir file saved before installing the upgrade we ought to be certain to figure it out. A .zip file is best when posting a group of related files for diagnosis. But if you want to post them seperately or just post the failing .ir file, that should be enough.

Remeber to make a post with links (not just names) to any files you upload to the
Diagnosis Area.

Looks like I guessed right and you didn't read it.
johnsfine wrote:Does this upgrade require a protocol upgrade as well as a device upgrade?
Yes. You have device upgrade CBL/1377 using protocol upgrade 162.
johnsfine wrote:And do you still have learned signals in that device mode?
Yes. On IR's learned signals tab you have both JVC and Russound signals learned in CD mode.

Your file description says
the cd button has cable 1377 on it but the volume buttons freeze the remote
and the CD vol buttons have learned JVC signals.

John
thanks for your review of my 7800 file.
over time i don't remember all the changes i have made to my 7800 remotes.
i have no idea what device i previously had on the cd button and why i had learned codes on the volume buttons nor do i even know what russound even is.
i deleted the learned codes and now all is well.
might be a good idea next time for me to reset the remote and add the device codes one by one.
maybe i will get in less trouble that way.
thanks a lot

Or just follow the advice given earlier in the thread: 8)
