JP1 Remotes

I'm in need of help. I can't see to get the following to work on my 8910.

LKP/DKP/DSM Combo Special Protocol for 8910/9910/HTPro without extender

Macro 1 and 2 are working fine from the macro buttons, but I was trying to experiment by assigning them to a key. I'm experimenting with Cable 1 and Long Press on Cable 1.

I've re-read the help file many times... but just don't seem to get it.

You added the protocol and set, on the General tab, dev8=Misc/1106. Close to being done.
Just add upgrade device from readme or this text, all 3 lines Then you should be able to see your LKP keymove on the Special Protocols tab.

By the way... I think I saw the Robman's IR file somewhere... (to use as a learning example)... but I can not find it now. Can anyone point me to the URL?

It is included with IR, and is called "FromRob.IR"

Several others have also uploaded their files for others to use as examples. I have immodestly done so HERE, for an example of completely maxing out the memory of a remote using the extender.

LKP without extender? I thought an extender was required to do LKP. I've got a very simple setup with my 9910 and wasn't planning to get into the complexity of an extender, but I would like to use LKP. (Much more convenient than using shifted keys for power on/off functions that you don't want to hit accidentally.)

What does it take to get LKP without an extender? Can somebody point me to a tutorial or something?

In general, LKP protocols/devices are designed for and packaged with extenders (which I heartily recommend), but a few have been written for non-extended remotes. You can find them in the Special Protocols area of the file section.

The only standalone (non-extender) LKP protocols I am aware of are for the: (1) URC 7800; (2) URC 8910/9910/HTPro; and (3) URC 601X/8011/8810w/8811 remotes.

Having said that, I would AGAIN heartily recommend the extender. Once you get into it, it's not really that complex. Careful reading is all that's required, but the enormous gain in flexibility is truly remarkable. (and you can always undo any "damage" by simply reloading your last working IR image.)

Cap, I've got a simple setup (projector, amp, dvd player, sat receiver) and it's working fine with the device upgrades and a few macros. Maybe I could do more with an extender but I really don't know what I'd do with it, and time has been limited enough lately that I haven't tried to figure it out just for the heck of it. Is there something wondrous that would become possible if I added an extender? What kind of benefits do you get with the extender?

Brad, thanks for the pointer! I've got a 9910. Do you have to assemble that LKPDKP.txt file (where do you get s3c8asm.exe?) or do you just paste the upgrade code and upgrade protocol (at the end of the ReadMe.txt file) into the appropriate IR tabs and then start mapping stuff?

I'm not here to convince you to use the extender, and you'll notice I pointed you to the same non-extender Special Protocol section that Brad did. If you're happy, you're happy. It's possible that you have no benefits to accrue from using the extender - good for you. Presuming that your SAT is NOT a PVR, and/or your DVD is not a DVR, and your tv does NOT have variable aspect ratio-type settings that you may need to change depending on what source you're watching, the only immediate benefits of the extender for you may be much faster macros, and much more keymove/macro memory.

But if you have occasion to change channels while watching a DVD, or want to record to your DVR wile watching the SAT, the flexibility in button assignments, the virtual "punch-through" of OTHER button sets (like transport, or PIP families) may be a useful feature. Additionally, depending on whether or not you (a) HAVE discrete on/off functions for all of your gear, (b) CARE whether or not you have discrete ON/OFF functions for your gear, may determine whether or not you would benefit from the ability to use ToadTog (only available in the extended remote).

It's up to you.

Capn HAS convinced me to try the extender. I believe his advise is right on the money.
BUT... like you, I am trying to learn JP1 / IR / KeyMapMaster / etc.
There's a lot to it. And while this user community is chock full of great people who quickly come to the aid of a newbee, and while several key people have labored to write lots of information trying to explain these tasks, I find it very difficult to accomplish my goals:

1. Learn the possibilities of what my remotes can do with the aid of JP1.
2. Decide / Define how I would like my remote to function.
3. Find what tools I need to accomplish the functionality
4. Load enhancements.
5. Figure out how to get them working for me on my equipment.
6. Implement my design choices.

But the endeavor will continue as time allows. And it will include the trial / use of an extender.

Like Capn Trips, I too would recommend you go the extender route.
