First thing first, this is my first post and I'm grateful to this site and those genius who discovered the JP1 and made the IR and KM. Because of them and all others who posted upgrade files, now we finally have our dreamed remote: fully customizable, device-oriented and activity-oriented in a simple and cheap format.
Nothing else can beat or even come close to JP1. Those Philips or Sony $$ remotes are cute, but they cannot learn all my remotes and all the functions/buttons. Even though they can, there are always some buttons misplaced and they are still device-oriented only. Without the JP1's unique feature of key mover, those craps are very hassle to use with home theater where I have to access different components at the same time. With them, I'm always lost in device buttons and controlling a wrong component. With them, I'd rather still use separate remotes.
Those $$$ or $$$$ remotes could be customizable and could be activity-oriented, but they are so complicated with so many fancy and confusing buttons and screens. And they are huge!
Even OFA's new JP1.2 remotes such as 8820 are craps compared to JP1. They have much larger built-in code lib and learning capacity, but they still don't have all my components and cannot be fully customized in the way I want.
So, after extensive searching and playing, here is my $0.02 to all beginners: get a 8811 for only $20, it is the final remote you'll ever need. If it is too bulky to you or your wife, add to it a cute 6131NW for just $9.98 from Walmart or a modded one from Rob. Yes, you still need a 8811 or 8910 (and why not for just $20), because you can try JP1 stuff with them right out of box and they can be used for code decoding with their learn function and IR. All smaller ones cannot learn.
The funny thing is: I started looking for a single remote to replace all my remotes, but I ended up with even more remotes! As I can have a fully customizable cute remote like the 6131NW for only $10/ea, now I can afford as many as I want for:
1) One or two configured to be device-oriented only, just to combine all the old remotes. Finally I can throw all the old ones out and clean up my sofa table.
2) Many configured to be activity-oriented, location-oriented and user-oriented for my living room, my center and right sofas, my kitchen, my bedrooms, my parents... never need to find a misplaced remote again and everybody gets his/her own favorite one.
Yes, with JP1, I can!
P.S. OFA: you are so smart to create such smart remotes, but why so stupid to not offer the cable and software, in a computer and Internet age? If you do, you can easily leave all others into dust.
My view of JP1
