Device Combiner tab does not refresh in RemoteMaster 1.46

Hello,
I'm having some problems with RemoteMaster. When I create a configuration with the Device Combiner protocol, save the configuration, quit and restart RM, reload the configuration, and click on the Device Combiner tab, it does not display anything.
It looks like a refresh issue, since selecting several of the menus afterwards leaves a "ghost" of the menu on the screen. And minimizing and re-opening the window completely erases everything on the application's screen.
This is with RemoteMaster 1.46, on an Athlon/64 system running Gentoo Linux, kernel 2.6.15-gentoo, and I've tried both blackdown jdk 1.4.2.03, and IBM jdk 1.4.2.03. Unfortunately the sun jdk isn't available for my system, and I haven't been able to get their jre to work at all.
A list of the exact steps I used is reproduced below.
Thank you for your help,
--noos
0 - Type "java -jar RemoteMaster.jar" on the command line
1 - Change "Protocol" to "Device Combiner"
2 - Select the "Device Combiner" tab
3 - Click "Add"
4 - Change "Protocol" to "Sony 12/15"
5 - Change "Device 1" to "12"
6 - Click "OK"
7 - Select "Save as..." from the "File" menu
8 - Save as "test.rmdu"
9 - Select "Quit" from the "File" menu
10 - Type "java -jar RemoteMaster.jar" on the command line
11 - Select "test.rmdu" from the "Recent" menu in the "File" menu
12 - Answer "No" in the "Save upgrade?" dialog box
13 - Click on the "Device Combiner" tab
