I downloaded RM last November. I worked with it for a few days and had to put it aside for other projects. I tried it again 2 days ago and the computer becomes locked up when I attempt to load a file. It is really locked up. I have to turn off the computer power to regain control. I tried the latest version of RM. No help. I downloaded the latest version of JAVA runtime and it helped a bit. Now I can regain control of the lockup with control-alt-delete. The system works normally until I click on the "file" menu. It then asks if I want to save the data. No matter how I respond the computer locks up.
Has anyone reported this problem?

Try a couple of things:
1) make sure the folders that the file menu is pointing to exists.
2) Delete your RM .properties file and start over.
3) un-install JAVA, reboot, and re-install JAVA
Let us know how you make out.
RemoteMaster hangs up computer

Nils,
I tried your suggestions without success. I had 5 copies of JAVA listed on my Control Panel remove software applet. I thought sure this was the problem. I took them all off and installed the latest version. When this did not work I installed an older version of Java. The next morning Java was already waiting to install a new version.
I installed the same Remote Master software on my laptop. It works fine.
I can now see the properties file on the laptop that does not show up on the desktop. If I load a rdmu file everything works OK until I click on file and try to save it. Then everything freezes up. Would the error file help you?
Any suggestions?

Yes, post the error file so we can get a look at it. Please put it in the diagnostic area and link it from here.

the RM error file is posted in Diagnostics.
Posted under "rmaster.err"
Sorry but I could not figure out how to get a link to it.

The link is:
rmaster.err
Sometimes I can read an rmaster.err file enough to understand what went wrong. Not this time. This might be one only Greg can understand.
But, did you already try deleting the RemoteMaster.properties file? Even though I can't confirm it by readding the .err file, the symptoms seem to fit what you get if an old .properties file is present pointing to content (directories etc.) that no longer exist.

Somehow I missed that detail on first read.
Do you know how to make hidden files visible? (that one might be hidden).
Are you sure which is the current directory at the point when RM is run? You might not be looking in the right directory for the .properties file. Do you know how to do a full search of the directory tree for .properties files?

If you're looking at the page in question, you would...
1) Highlight the data in the address line (ie, the stuff starting with http:// )
2) "Copy" the data by doing CNTL-C
3) Then when you're writing you're reply, you would "paste" the data by doing CNTL-V.

I don't see anything in that rmaster.err file to help me figure out what is going on.
You say it locks up when you try click on File -> Open.
It prompts you to save the current upgrade, and regardless of what you press ( Yes, No, or Cancel), it locks up.
We saw some issues like this way back when I first started work on RM, and it was fixed by upgrading to a more recent version of Java.
I've added some debug statements to RM to help narrow this down:
RemoteMaster.v1.41pre1.zip.

enclosed is file RM_problems.zip
3 files:
rmaster(old).err -original RMversion
rmaster(new).err - new rev
remotemaster(old).properties - original RM software

You can't "enclose" a file in a post, you need to post it to the Diagnosis Area and then link to it here.

here is the link to the .properties file:
https://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=2657
I deleted the properties file and it did not help. Also RM did not make a new file when run.
Last night I cleaned out the start up menu without success. Found nothing that would be likely to interfere with RM.
A year ago I created another user on my computer. I tried running RM with this user and it works. It did not run when I clicked on Remotemaster.jar but did run when I clicked on rmaster.bat. I will try to use the RESTORE function to find where things went wrong.

Does your user account have admin rights? It could have something to do with Windows security settings.

You don't by chance have a shortcut to your Desktop on your Desktop do you? See

That's a bug that hangs Java. This problem (Windows reboots or BSDs) is different. I had reboots a few months back on exiting RM and I think it was when answering "No" to saving upgrade. Unfortunately I didn't track down the problem but just deleted lots of garbage, ran Virus scanners, updated Windows etc. as a blunderbus approach to solving weird problems.
