RCU810 Backlight Repair

Post by Dex »

After carefully installing a JP1 connector in an old RCU810 the blue backlight quit working. On close inspection I found that one of the contacts on the EL sheet had disintegrated. This fix won't help if you've got a bad transformer, but if the problem is with the EL sheet this might be worth a try. Proceed at your own risk.

1) Disassemble the remote (instructions can be found here).

2) Separate the EL sheet and transparent sheet from the circuit board. Pay attention to how they're oriented.

3) Cut out two aluminum foil washers slightly larger than the round contact areas on the EL sheet (I used Reynolds Wrap). The washers should be just a single layer of foil, but slightly crumpled is OK. The easiest way to make the washers is to punch a couple of tiny holes in the foil and then cut a small circle around each hole.

4) Insert the two screws into the EL sheet.

5) Place the washers on the screws.

6) Place the transparent sheet on the screws.

7) Attach the assembled sheets to the circuit board.

8) Make sure the foil is not touching the transformer pins.

9) Reassemble the remote.

If all goes well you now have a working backlight!
