Mitsubishi VS-414R discrete codes

I am looking for discrete codes for this rather old big-screen. In several places I've found Mitsubishi On=167 and Off=039. Yet, when I program these into my OFA 8811 (using the 9-9-4 sequence) the set does not respond. Should I conclude the set is just too old to have discrete codes?
Or, what am I missing?

If it does not have discrete codes, what work-arounds are applicable?
Input selection is also a problem, of course.
