URC-8011

Okay, so I started to panic after learning that my fav 8811 would be discontinued. I popped over to the Fry's electronics store and saw that indeed, they had not 8811's. I found (with the remotechart.xls) that the URC-8011 seemed to fit the bill for a possible replacement. I picked up one to experiment with. I actually dig the smaller size.
Here's what I have come up against. Haven't put soldering iron to PC board yet, but it seems to not have the eeprom. In searching, some posts say it has a 2K eeprom, but I see a blank spot on the PCB where it might go.
do I need to buy a 2K eeprom and install it? I plan on doing the male 6-pin tonight. The overall plan is to do programming on the 8811, then transfer to the 8011 for the everyday use.
I found this post on modifing a similar remote.

Here's the remote in question:

PS: the next time I went to Fry's, they had a couple 8811's in stock. I bought one for reserve. Now I'm ready for the revolution!

Your assumption is correct. The 8011 is jp1 capable but only after you install the 2K EEPROM and the pins. The instructions you linked to should get you through the task.

Remember we mean 2K BYTES.

Most places that sell eeproms spec them in BITS, so to get a 2KByte eeprom you buy a 16KBit eeprom.

Also, the 8011 needs one jumper in addition to the eeprom and the 6 pin header.

Also, just FYI, if you need any more URC-8811 remotes, I have a small supply of them available for $20 each.

Thanks guys.
Wow, that was fast response time. Makes me wonder if us guys have a life past JP1 :}

I'll be ordering up the eeprom today (thanks Robman for that clarification).
2K bytes? That bites! Explains why I run out of memory so soon!
I've got some A/V components that are not listed in the codes section, so once I get things up and running to my liking I'll post the results.
