URC-8011

Okay, so I started to panic after learning that my fav 8811 would be discontinued. I popped over to the Fry's electronics store and saw that indeed, they had not 8811's. I found (with the remotechart.xls) that the URC-8011 seemed to fit the bill for a possible replacement. I picked up one to experiment with. I actually dig the smaller size.
Here's what I have come up against. Haven't put soldering iron to PC board yet, but it seems to not have the eeprom. In searching, some posts say it has a 2K eeprom, but I see a blank spot on the PCB where it might go.
do I need to buy a 2K eeprom and install it? I plan on doing the male 6-pin tonight. The overall plan is to do programming on the 8811, then transfer to the 8011 for the everyday use.
I found this post on modifing a similar remote.

Here's the remote in question:

PS: the next time I went to Fry's, they had a couple 8811's in stock. I bought one for reserve. Now I'm ready for the revolution!
