I bought the One For All kit with the cable (apparently parallel?)
from an online source some time back and am now trying to get going with it. I've downloaded the software and documents, but can't find
"the real starting point". For example, I can see where the 6-pin
connector plugs into the remote, but do not know which way. IOW,
I can see the marker for pin 1 on the cable connecotr but there is
no pin 1 marker on the connector on the remote. It will fit either
way.

Also, are there some port parameters I have to set in Windows XP
so the remote can communicate through the printer port?

If there is some document that covers this kind of thing, pleas point me to it.

Thanks in advance,

Ed

Hi.
there's a sticky at the top of this forum that should answer most of your questions.

Thanks, Jeff. BlueDoor pointed me towards a doc that had a photo showing the cable orientation.

However, when I run IR and do Interface|Check Interface it tells me the remote is not responding. Windows XP shows LPT1, the only installed parallel port, is working fine. Any ideas?

Try plugging the cable the other way. It won't hurt the remote or the PC. Also try with fresh batteries, with no batteries and with one battery reversed.

I also recall that I had to monkey with the parameters for the port to get it to work, address offset was the key. There's only 3-4 choices so try them all.

Best,
jeff

Tried all of the above. Also tried switching the Windows parallel port over to another port address and chnging it correspondingly in IR. No matter what, when I do Check Interface it tells me "No response from interface."

Beginning to think that I've got a bad cable form BlueDoor. But I did pop the DB25 open and check it against the spec. Seems to be OK... the
all the possible ground pins shorted together. Wires are color coded so my guess is things are OK in the little connector too.

Windows says the LPT1 is working OK. I had a printer hooked to it
when I installed Xp a few weeks and it worked OK.

Thanks, Jeff.

Where were your tweaking parameters, Windows or in IR?

In IR the only parameters I see are:

-Advanced|Transmission Delay
-Interface|parallel|Select port address

Following one of the documents referred to in a similar thread a while back, I have set Delay to 1600. For port address, I checked the port
address that shows up in Windows Device Manager, which shows
I/O range 0378-037F. So I set Port address in IR to 378. Gives
me the "No response from interface" report.

I got the One-for-all hoping to use it to get some functionality
that I could transfer over to my MX-500. However, I think I see
Harmony in my future!

I have thoroughly examined and tested the cable with
a digital multimeter. All the wires go the right places,
the resistances are correct, the diode tests OK. No matter
what I do it says No response from the remote. If
I do a download or upload I see the LED on the One For All
remote blink, so there is some kind of connectivity.

I am using IR 6.15 and the DLL that is packages with it...
dated 6/26/2005.

I am running Windows XP pro, SR2 on an Asus A7V266-E
board which has an onboard parallel port. Windows says it's
working fine. Port address is the same, 378H, in BIOS,
Windows Device Manager, and IR Interface|parallel.

Anything else I should try before I put all this stuff on eBay
and buy a Harmony?

Ed

Ed, I didn't see you mention what remote you have, but try a factory reset of the remote, then try again the battery combo trick. Try without batteries (how my 6131 responds), with one battery facing the wrong way (the way my HTPro responds), and with all batteries in correctly (the way my 1995 responds). Depending on your remote, the factory reset may be a 981 command or a series of commands for LCD remotes.

On the Interface menu make sure Auto Check is not checked. Then try a Download to see if it works. You can also try stepping up the Transmission Delay on the Advanced menu.

Are you sure your remote is JP1 compatible? It sounds like you may have a nw JP1.2 remote, with which none of the current JP1 tools work.

As far as the Harmony goes, I wouldn't give up on JP1 - just get a COMPATIBLE UEI remote (6131, 8811, whatever) from Robman if yours is not.

I recall that I had to change the address. there were several choices and I tried them all until I got one to work.

the most important thing is what is the remote that you bought from bluedo? If it's not jp1 (and is jp1.2) compatible, then you're out of luck. But I'd be surprised if they sold you a non jp1-able remote and a jp1 cable.

Don't give up just yet. I tried a harmony and it went back. before I bought an 8811 and jp1 cable. The possible combinations of settings/connections is finite, so slow down and try them all systematically. this is the brute-force way, but it's doable. settings - address/delay, connection would be up or down wrt the jp1 cable and the remote connector. Also you must ahve admin priviledges to make it work on xp.

Jim,

Thanks.

It's a One-For-All. Do you happen to know the reset sequence for it?
So, is it that the remote gets in a snit of some kind and resetting
will fix it? Also, although I've tried all the battery arrangements I'm not sure what the purpose is. Is this supposed to be a work-around for a voltage mismatch with the parallel port on my computer? It's a widely used desktop board with an onboard port that has worked with my printer.

Yes. It's a One-For-All, brand new URC-8811B00. Got it at BlueDoor with the cable sold as a kit, so one would expect....

I don't give up easy! I have another computer running ME that I am trying to ressurect so I can try it on it.

Just because it's a "One for All" does not mean it's JP1 compatible. The newer "One for All" remotes are precisely those that are JP1.2 and NOT JP1-able. However, the 8811 most certainly is, so that's not the problem.

(and I'm pretty sure it's BlueDo, not BlueDoor)

Hoopefully some of the other folks can come up with suggestions to further test. It really feels like something simple that we're all overlooking, but I can't guess what just now.
