RM and Keymoves

Hi,

as my remote is a bit memory limited on the move/macro side but has more than enough free mem for upgrades I stumbled about something I don't understand.

I now have a working config for my Bellagio AD-2020 DVD-Player (many thanks to The Robman again).
When loaded in RemoteMaster changing the devicetyoe has quite some effects on the upgrade code cause there are some devicetypes that generate more keymoves than others (mainly for the buttons A...H on my URC-7541).

Devicetype Keymoves
TV 0
DVD 11
VCR 11
SAT 2
CD 13
AMP 13

I just don't understand why this is so.
ATM it looks like I should convert all my upgrades to device type TV to save on the move/macro side to have some space left for real macros.

The designers decided (on what basis is not necessarily clear, but... ) that certain keys on the remote are "appropriate" for certain devices and have limited the remotes to only organically (i.e. directly in the device setup code) support functions assigned to these predefined keysets. For example, in most UEI remotes, in TV mode, you cannot assign the transport keys without using keymoves, while in Audio mode, you usually cannot assign the PIP-related keys. These are the predefined "keysets" for each device type, and they vary from remote to remote.

Depending on what device type you select, AND what keys you want to use, the JP1 tools (KM and RM) will automatically assign the function directly within the upgrade or via a keymove, depending on the keymap associated with the device type you selected.

In KM, the "Layout" tab lists all of the buttons that you can define for a given device type. In RM, there is on such list, BUT the image on the "layout" page indicates the available buttons with a yellow circle. Assigning a function to any button outside these sets will generate a keymove.

Clear? (as mud, most likely)

Thx for the explanation, until now I didn't even recognize the yellow borders on the buttons in RM, so for my remotes all upgrades go to TV or SAT as those can use all keys without keymoves ;)
