1. Device: sony slv-393
2. Type of device: vhs VCR
3. JP1 Remote model:urc-4063B06
4. JP1 user?will be...
5. Still have original remote?no
6. Checked the file section?yes
7. Checked Pronto file section (at R/C)?yes
8. Partially working setup code?yes - 033
9. Learning remote question?no

So, the sony code 033 works to power on and off the VCR, and to change channels up and down, but I cannot turn off the annoying on screen display of the tape counter - even if there's no tape in there. My remote needs a 'display' button remapped over one of the useless buttons like 'fav ch'. can anyone give me the 'display' button code for this VCR and how to do this? thanks.

The codes are here, to map them:

1. press VCR
2. press and hold setup for two blinks
3. enter 9-9-4
4. tap setup for one blink
5. enter advanced code
6. pick key

I see a few possible problems here.
The "info" button is usually the "display" function. Have you tried it?
033 is the VTR1 (or BetaMax mode) and not all functions are available on VHS machines. There is a VTR1, VTR2, VTR3 switch on most Sony VCR's (front panel). You should use VTR3 on a VHS deck to get all the remote functions working. (URC code 032). VTR2 (URC code 034) (8MM VCR mode) has been left off most newer remotes but can be added via JP1.
Once you get the command modes correct (and start with JP1), there are a great number of additional functions available that even the original remote didn't have on it. This is a set of upgrades that will get you started if you want to really customize your remote control ability.

Thank you very much Masked Man and zaphod. following Masked's directions i was able to change the 'enter' button to OSD (224) and this did it! Unfortunately the remote didn't allow me to remap 'fav chan'. Also, zaphod, you are right, when I switch between the three different vtr modes, the 032 033 and 034 must be used... OSD 224 worked with all of them. the menu browsing functionality doesn't work yet but I think it's just a matter of time before I get that.. hopefully robman's maps will make it easier , but since my older remote has so few buttons I'm not sure what to expect.

thanks for your quick responses!

I would also direct you to THE OTHER ROB's site (which is, oh by the way, linked in this very forum in a sticky post cleverly labeled Sony Codes. If you want a Sony code, go there and be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of Sony-specific ingformation to be found.
