Anyone care to comment on a small-ish remote choice....
Hi there. Ok, so i have 2 remotes in my possession: a 9960 Kameleon and 8910 OFA. Both are not to my liking. The Kameleon is tough to get used to with the membrane screen thing and no tactile feel to the keys. The 8910 is big and bulky and the button layout is wierd. I'd like to get something smaller and more compact. I need the programmability of JP1 so that i could get my audio working (Bose Lifestyle system and using a C-1024 IR2RF converter). I need to control 4-5 components:
Sony TV
Bose Lifestyle 30 (C-1024 box)
Onkyo DVD
Sci Atlantic cable box
Any suggestions on a sleeker, slimmer or more compact, lightweight remote?
Thanks.

I'm not sure of the size of the 6131 it may be the best fit. I know the 6011 and 8011 are smaller and lighter than the 8910 and probably a good size and shape for you.
BUT all of those are non JP1 compatible as normally sold.
I'm not sure of the best way to get JP1 capable versions: buy them and get UEI to upgrade them (probably with 1K eeprom), vs. buy and solder on the 2K eeprom yourself, vs. find someone selling modified (I assume 2K eeprom) units.
I think the above covers your best choices. I don't think the remote you want exists "off the shelf".

The 6131, 6011 and 8011 are all exactly the same size (in fact, you can interchange the base half of the shell between all three remotes).
I would recommend the 6131 as it's by far the more popular of the 3, but the other 2 have backlighting if that's important.
You can get the modified "JP1 ready" 6131 from ReplayTV.us and surfremotecontrol.com

It's about an inch longer then the 6131.

But how do you like the transport keys being up at the top of the remote, I've got to imagine that that makes them very hard to use on a regular basis.mtakahar wrote:I like shape of the buttons, especially menu navigation and channel up/down, better than the ones on the old 6131.
And yes, the new remote does need to be modified for JP1.

Most of the new UEI remotes use a new flash processor that it not (yet) JP1 compatible.neals wrote:Just got off the phone with CT Global tech support. Looks like the 6820 and 8820 both have JP1 6 pin header built-in. Do you guys no if IR and KM will work with either of these?

I hope I'm wrong, but I think Rob is underestimating the difficulty of figuring out the flash processor when he says "yet".
I think it is too big an effort for any of the current JP1 experts to consider attacking. It is well into the range of "If you have to ask 'how?' then you couldn't do it anyway".
Maybe the folks at UEI will someday decide that PC programmability could improve their market, and give us the answers. But I'd bet against that as well.
I suggest getting a JP1 modified 6131.
