Is there a filetype description anywhere?

Forgive me, but I am obviously "slow", however, I'm learning, painfully slow but have found and made the following assumptions about file types.

.RDF = config/descriptions of JP1 (programmable) remotes

.IR = IR.EX "dumps" of contents of JP1 downloads and/or modified JP1 "loads."

.TXT = "source code" for generating uploadable hex codes for progamming a JP1 remote button to match an OEM's dedicated remote.

.RMDU = same for RemoteMaster?
(where are these found on the web?)

Correct. It tells IR and RM and the extender installer the characteristics of a specific JP1 model. BUt KM doesn't use RDF files (it has similar knowledge built in).

Right.

Maybe (I can't tell what you mean). KM stores upgrade files with the .txt extension for later editing. But the transfer to the remote must go through IR.EXE, and the transfer from KM to IR goes through the clipboard, not through a file.

Right. Again, to reach the remote the data goes through the clipboard from RM to IR, then through the JP1 cable.

RDF files (and the programs) from the tools folder

KM's .txt files and .rmdu files from the Device Upgrades folder

.ir files you make yourself, normally be downloading from the remote to IR.EXE then editing and saving. You might also start with IR's file/new command. If you download, IR should figure out which RDF to use. For file/new, you tell it which RDF to use.
