Started on saturday and have read almost everything I could find, but seem to be missing a basic understanding of how to accomplish anything.

===history===
urc-8910 b02
ir.exe (latest) installed and running
interface cable built tested works (parallel)
downloaded and saved 8910's current config
KM run, functional, but can't understand how to proceed
RM run, functional, ditto
===========

As a starting project, I have downloaded "PioneerVSX3800.txt" and would like add it to the 8910's current config that I have saved and upload it back to the 8910, but am stumped.

thanks for any clues.

Have you read JP1 - Just How Easy Is It? There's a version for KM users and a version for RM users.

These documents explain how to take a downloaded device upgrade and install it in your remote. They also explain how to create your own upgrade from scatch.

If they aren't providing you with enough information, ask specific questions, which we can answer and maybe even use to improve those documents.

I have, several times.... ;-/

What I am missing is an "overview" specifically, can't get a handle on relating the remote buttons to the process... for example, the download to ir.exe doesn't relate to the remote itself... i.e. see the hex codes, but can't associate with the buttons or the function they will call.

When you download FROM your remote TO IR do you not have series of Tabs, like "General", "KeyMoves", "Fav/Scan", "Device Upgrades", "Protocol upgrades", etc?

If not, IR is not finding the rdf for your remote. You must have the rdf for your remote in the same directory as IR.EXE or point IR (there's a drop-down menu selection) to the directory where your RDF's are saved.

To respond to your earlier offer, may I suggest a table added to this file near the top that describes what files are for and how the are used and implimented... i.e.;

RFD = remote/button layout definition files used by IR(???) that allows the program to display the raw downloaded data from the remote as it relates to the button layout of the remote???

XLS = ??? (other than the KM excel fiel) how are these files used?

IR = Raw remote data? To be merged, editable?

TXT = which programs (ir, km, rm) can access these files... where to go to find more documentation?

====upgrade===

Still not clear to me what I am going to be able to accomplish... exactly what is an "Upgrade" replaces a device?

tia,

an fyi... In the document "JP1 - Just How Easy Is It?"

"Next download the current set of RDFs, also from the Tools folder and unzip these into a separate folder."

Just went back and looked at the "Tools" link in the document, and as far as I can see, there are no RFD files at the location pointed to by the link.

Yes, we've switched away from Yahoo. Things are now stored in the File Section of these fourms.

I'm updating the RM version of the document now....

Thanks... think it will be appreciated, esp since, even with a lot of looking, I didn't find this section until today ;-)

>> RM version of the document <<

However, it seems as if the RDF are needed by everyone since IR depends on them as well, especially as it appears to newcomers that IR.exe is the starting point.

Perhaps also adding "RDF" etc to the "00_JP1_New_Tools_Folder.html"
descriptor on the Yahoo page.

I've fixed the links and worked a little on the text in the RM version. I hope the changes are helpful.

Yahoo is no longer the first place to look for information about JP1. You look here in the JP1 forums at www.hifi-remote.com.

In the JP1 Beginners forum is the Beginners - read this thread first thread, which has links to the docs and tools, including information about dependencies (such as that IR and RM both require the RDFs).
