The current results of the poll are 17 to 12 in favor of moving to
the new forum. Plus, as there's only one way to make everyone give
the new forums a proper try and that's to turn off the ability to
post here, so that's what I've done.
In the meantime, I'll try to address some of the issues that were
raised.
It was suggested that with the email feature, no proactive effort was
needed to see the posts as they arrived directly to your inbox. It
occurs to me that anyone using the email option would have the
messages filtered into a seperate folder, which could be viewed at
your convenience. Well, isn't deciding to check the JP1 email folder
a "proactive action" somewhat equivilent to checking the new forum;s
web page?
One might argue that the fact that there are clearly new messages in
the JP1 email folder alerts the user to the fact. Well, given the
volume of messages in the JP1 forum, couldn't it also be argued that
at any given time it's a fairly safe assumption that there are new
messages present, regardless of the location (ie, email folder vs.
web page).
Someone suggested that the non-threaded approach at Yahoo might lead
to someone jumping into a discussion that might not have otherwise
interested them, just because so many "experts" had offered opinions
along the way. Well, if this is your preference, you could select
the "View posts since last visit" option. For those that prefer the
threaded approach, just visit the forum in the normal manner.
If you're the helpful type and don't want to leave anyone hanging,
the new forum also has a "View unanswered posts" option. It also has
a "View all your posts" option.
That just leaves the issue of the file section. Until such time as
the software to incorporate a file section into the new forum is
complete, I intend to keep the Yahoo groups around as both a file
section and a message archive.
If anyone wants to discuss this topic further, this new "Web Site
Issues" forum would be the correct place.
Thanks,
Rob
