Hello everybody. I am very new to this, I just made my cable today, so please forgive me if someone has figured this out before. I was trying to make a plug using an IDE cable like in the instructions for the simple interface, and I was having a hell of a time doing all that cutting and pulling wires out and gluing stuff back together and all that. As I was digging through a box today, I found a cable that is used to connect a CD drive to a sound card. It is a 4 pin cable that is female on each end. I cut the cable in the middle, glued the two 4-pin connectors together back to back, and I ended up with an already wired 8-pin connector that fits in the remote with room to spare. All I had to do was splice the wires to some longer wire and wire up the parallel port side. The only thing you have to worry about is since the plug has room on both sides, you have to pick which 2 pins not to use and make sure to always plug the cable in that way. I have already used the cable with my remote and did some downloading and uploading, and it works great. You may already have some of these cables laying around, as they still come with new optical drives despite being worthless, or I am sure they could be bought for a few cents. Feedback would be appreciated, and thanks for such a great website.

Well, that's a neat trick. I assume your CD cable happened to have four wires, one I have on my desk has only three (positions 1,2,&4 Sad ) As for the unused two pins on the end, you could fill them with crazy glue so that you couldn't accidentally use them.
