Need help with Sony STR-K740p surround sound system

Post by sgtarky »

Hi have a jp1 remote and the original remote . I have A sony reciever surround sound system STR-K740p. with both remotes only power works. If you press the number pad on the jp1 remote it changes the modes, video1,2,,dvd tuner etc. I have never seen a component do this. either the rf module is out it wouldnt work at all of course what I really want to do is control the volume and no button i push changes the volume. I can manual adjust the volume tho.

I think you're actually seeing 3 different situations here.

These units have two different remote modes (AV1 vs AV2) and your original remote is not set to match the receiver's mode, so nothing wants to work. The 740 came with an AV2 only remote while the 840 could switch between the two modes. Check the owner's manual carefully for the resetting method. The setup function you want should be C.MODE.AVX -- AV2. This will match the original remote but the JP1 remote will probably stop functioning unless you have added an AV2 code via JP1. Most built-in remote codes are AV1

The numeric key direct inputs are normal for almost all Sony receivers and the unit will even turn on when the selected input is keyed, making for very usefull macros if you get into that later.

The volume problem is probably due to foreign keymoves, macros, or upgrades. The original remote also has an internal volume punchthrough (in JP1 terms). If the TV was selected last the remote is sending a TV volume command rather than a receiver volume command and the remote has to be put into some other mode before it will send receiver volume commands again.

Confused yet? Unless the JP1 remote has had upgrades installed, it might be time to reset everything back to original settings and start over. Completing the suggested (required?) template will help the JP1 experts answer JP1 related questions. I just happen to have a lot of Sony data available to me.
Just call me Zaphod (or Steve) --- I never should have started using numbers in a screen name but I just can't stop now.
