Multiple device codes operate my pvr?
Hello,
I just bought a Hauppauge WinTV PVR2 (PVR which records video to my hard disk in my PC), and am working on setting it up in my 2116 because the remote that came with it is anything but intuitive. The signals from the Hauppauge remote are RC5 device 30 (which is different from the Hauppauge remote in the files section, which is RC5 device 31).
My Advent TV uses RC5 device 1.
The problem is, the Advent signals coming from the 2116 (RC5 dev 1) are operating both my TV and the PVR. (The PVR factory remote does NOT operate the Advent TV, however.)
Is this a normal characteristic of RC5 signals, and is there anything I can do about it?
Thx,
Tbone

I don't think it's characteristic of RC5.
The question that leaps out from your post is what do the signals from the original Advent remote do to the PVR?
If they don't affect the PVR, then we need to figure out why the RC5:1 signals generated by the 2116 are different.
If they do affect the PVR, the next step is figure out whatever config file inside the PVR controls its interpretation of IR signals.

I assume the Advent remote also works the PVR? I can't think of any easy way to fix this from the remote side, so you might want to research whether there's a way to fix the Hauppauge to not respond to the device 1 codes. The Hauppauge is a PC based concept, right?
Also, before you do too much messing around with codes for the Advent, be sure to search these forums for additional info as it's REALLY easy to completely fry these sets by sending the wrong IR signal, and the offending signal is a standard button in the TV/0054 codeset.

Thanks for the fast replies.
What's next?
Thx again,

I just tried the original Advent factory remote and yes, it also works the Hauppauge. The Robman wrote:I assume the Advent remote also works the PVR?
Yes, it's a standalone TV receiver which connects to my notebook via USB. And it works great! Too bad the remote sucks. The Robman wrote:The Hauppauge is a PC based concept, right?
Yes, I am painfully aware of that issue, my Advent was one of the ones that got fried and it took like 4 months to get it back out of the shop! Good thing it was still under warranty (but just barely...)The Robman wrote: Also, before you do too much messing around with codes for the Advent, be sure to search these forums for additional info as it's REALLY easy to completely fry these sets by sending the wrong IR signal, and the offending signal is a standard button in the TV/0054 codeset.

What do you know about files in the PVR that control its IR reception and/or what can you find by searching or asking in forums where other people know about that PVR?Tbone03045 wrote:What's next?

Problem solved
Turns out there's an easy fix to this one.
There are three device codes defined in the IR initialization file (Irremote.ini), for RC5 devices 0, 30, and 31. All it took was a semicolon to comment out the device 0 definition line in that file, and the IR receiver no longer sees my RC5 device 0 codes. Piece of cake. Now to work on optimizing my 2116 for this excellent unit! In my research, I've also discovered that I can use my remote to run and control just about any other program in my notebook using this interface. This might get interesting!
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, John.

Sorry I wasn't paying attention, I"ve used the Hauppauge upgrades to control my MediaMVP and PVR250's for quite a while and should have told you about irremote.ini. You should search on the SHSPVR and Sage forums for more hints on using the remote in other applications.
Just call me Zaphod (or Steve) --- I never should have started using numbers in a screen name but I just can't stop now.
