It is with great sadness that I have to pass on the news that Jon Armstrong has passed away. The following message was posted on the
coontech.com forums:
I'm sorry to say that Jon has passed away suddenly from a Cerebral Anyurism. His death was very sudden and quick. My name is Gabriel Chapman, I am his son-in-law. I work in the IT field and know exactly how much Jon loved his tinkering with remotes/ir and the various X-10 related computing.
His funeral will be held this coming Saturday at Gawler's & Sons funeral home at 2PM in Washington DC where he lived. If you or anyone would like any more information please contact me at gchapman (at) sycr (dot) com
Thank you,
Gabriel Chapman
Jon has been an active member of the JP1 community since the very beginning and I actually met him in person last November while he was visiting Chicago on business. His presence here will certainly be missed.

Always a stand up guy, always willing to help others. Made the community
richer with his presence. His passing is a great loss, but in these times
I try to focus on the good someone has done and Jon sure did a lot of
good.

I just sank into my chair.
Jon is probably the best person I have ever "met" on the message boards. I have several personal emails from him when he was helping me figure out IR for may air conditioner and other items. His help knew no bounds. He asked for nothing.
I knew him mostly from the Adicon and Homseer message boards. I posted this on the HS board on 3/25. I hope he saw it:

Glad to see you here Jon - thought you had left.
Took your advice and got a JP1 cable and a 15-2117. Now if X-10 would only ship my 3 $7.99 HT pro's.
MeSteve: If it's IR, Jon knows it. He hangs around here:

Another fun hobby. I would of replied to your post but I didn't understand the question.
Thanks again Jon,
GLT
I told Jon I owed him a steak if he ever got to the Orlando area.
Now if somebody will tell me how, I'll send flowers. I'm sure Jon's giving spirt will serve him well in the afterlife.
Very sad,
GLT
PS _ I may crosspost this to the Homeseer board.

Jon was an immense help to me with all things JP1. I often used him as a grounding rod and sounding board, and he was always more than willing to help. He will be missed dearly here at JP1.
Rob, do you happen to know how old he was?

No, but I would guess late 50's.

Hits you like a ton of bricks, doesn't it?
Jon loved what he was doing.
Replying to a note of thanks for big effort on some eqipment, Jon replied 'Not work. Decoding IR protocols is a whacky hobby of mine'
An image well fitting the entire team of JP1 experts. Sorry you lost a buddy and a teammate and our inspiration. His will be a tough act to follow.

I sent the flowers below to be delivered Saturday:
The message is:
Jon's gracious help was greatly appreciated by his online friends at HiFi Remote, HomeSeer, Adicon, Cocoon Tech, Remote Central and others. His giving spirit will be remembered forever.
Sincerely, Jon's many online friends
I have not received any respose to my email yet and wanted to insure delivery so I called the funeral home and verified everything.
A very small gesture considering all of Jon's help.

I sent an email with my condolences to Jon's son-in-law Gabriel. I just received the following reply and thought I'd pass it along:
Mark:
Thank you for your kind words. Jon was an avid technologist when it came to the IR/Home automation groups, and I know that he enjoyed his interactions with the various groups he was involved in.
If you could pass the word, in lieu of flowers, could the various members of you group send a donation in Jon's name to his fathers Scholarship fund. Jon's father was a teacher at Lee College, and Jon had set up a scholarship fund in his name. Donations can be sent to:
Roland P. Armstrong Scholarship Fund:
c/o Dr. William McNiel at Lee College
PO Box 818
Baytown, TX 77522
Once again, thank your for the kind words.
Gabriel Chapman

This is sad news, and a real loss to the group. Jon and I corresponded numerous times over the years, and he was the sort of person I always hoped to meet personally some day. As a matter of fact, we were in the midst of a project, and his last email to me was on March 24. I am still shocked that he is gone, and we will all miss him very much.
