Panasonic old vs. Panasonic vs. Scientific Atlanta protocols

Can someone explain to me what (if any) relationship these protocols have to one another?

I'm working on an upgrade to incorporate my SA satellite receiver, and the decodes are Panny (old), as are all of the files for SA devices. Instinct says SA devices ought to use the SA protocol. It's not like there is a wide array of equipmenmt made by SA - it's all Cable/Satellite receivers, isn't it? What devices use the Scientific Atlanta protocol, if not SA devices?

Is Panasonic a upgrade for Panasonic (old) or is it a completely different protocol that simply post-dates Panasonic (old)?

Do I care, or as the old JP1 adage goes, "if it works, don't mess with it" ?

I don't recall what uses the SA protocol.
Almost all SA devices use Panasonic_old protocol, device 27.

Panasonic protocol is actually Kaseikyo protocol with the manufacturer code set to the value for the company that owns the Panasonic brand name. Panasonic protocol is not an upgrade of Panasonic_old.

I don't know who invented Panasonic_old protocol, nor who (if anyone) currently owns it as intellectual property. It was named by someone (I forget who) involved in reverse engineering IR protocols. At the time it was named, we knew of its use in many brands of old VCRs, but more commonly in Panasonic's old VCRs than other brands, and we knew of its use in a few old models of Panasonic TV. Thus the name.

They have both been used by Panasonic. From a JP1 point of view, they have nothing in common with each other, except for the name.
