Hello everybody,
I own a URC-7541 and when I changed the Satellite Receiver discovered that there is no code suitable. Finally I discovered JP1, so I hope I will be able to reprogram the remote.
The first question: Is there any alternative to a learning remote to record the codes from an unsupported remote?
I own an infrared receiver (Realmagic) that plugs into the serial port.

I did a quick search on "Realmagic" and didn't learn much about it, so I still down't know if it can learn or otherwise store IR signals. If it can store IR signals in a PC file, I might be able to gues the file structure from looking at a sample and then I could identify the IR signals.
My search did find a reference to RealMagic on the LIRC page

That seems to be saying you can use LIRC free software with RelaMagic hardware.
Several of the experts here can identify IR signals in the file format used by LIRC software to store learned signals, so if you can figure out how to make LIRC learn signals through the RealMagic hardware, we can decode the results. |

I would like to recommend the wal-mart OFA-8810w. You can use it to learn all you need to learn, then return it to wal-mart. At under $20 though, it is almost not worth the gas money driving back to wal-mart to return it. (and if you ever buy another piece of equipment it might come in handy if you have more codes to learn.) also, the 8810w is an awesome all around remote for $20: JP1 ready out of the box, learning/upgrade/protocols all work, supports at least eight devices (more I believe if you use an extender!).. you might just want to use this remote as at least a secondary remote for the kids or babysitter (heck, you might want to make it your primary remote.)
Also, have you obtained or built your jp1 cable yet? if not, see the market section of this forum, and if you want to be nice to the kind people who manage this forum, click on one of the banners above to get to the site of your choosing to buy the jp1 cable or kit.

The internet brings us so close together, it did not even occur to me that you would be in Spain, my apologies! So how is the weather? I am in Maryland, USA, and it is a very nice day today, around 70 degrees, sunny, very pleasant!
I wish I knew enough to recommend a low cost remote that is easily available in Spain, has learning and all the other functions so that the remote could still be useful to you after you no longer required it for just learning.

The main JP1 learning remote that's available in Europe is the URC-7560 (the last digit sometimes changes, based on the colour, etc)
However, if you'd like an American URC-8811 remote, like the one that was recommended, I can sell you one. Drop me a line if you're interested.
Also, I don't think you mentioned what satellite you have now. Have you checked the Pronto file section at Remote Central to see if they have a ccf file for it?

That would be a very, very hot weather for Europe ! 
Regarding learning remotes, the choice is limited in Europe. The cheaper model would be the URC-7562, but is already quite expensive in regard of equivalent american models.

I found the URC-7562 in a local Markt, 60 Euro (the sat receiver cost me 120 Euro), and actually I don't need another remote with less buttons than the URC-7541 (
The receives is sold under the Mark "FTEmaximal" in Spain (I think is comes from taiwan). The model is IRD400. A small but effective FTA Satellite Receiver, with a very fragile remote. I think a clone is sold in Germany as "Univers U-4100".
I made a search in Remote Central Database without results.
This weekend I will try to make a new PC infrared receiver and try to decode the protocol.

Once you've captured all the codes you need and built an upgrade, you could always return the URC-7562 (so keep it in good condition).

I was going to suggest that braulio go to www.walmart.com and buy the 8810w there, but for some reason I cannot seem to find it. I found 7 other learning remotes, none of them JP1 compatible.
Rob, If braulio wanted to buy an 8811 from you would it be cost effective, given his location? I wonder if it is super expensive to ship a small package from Chicago to Spain?

Compared to the price of OFA remotes in Europe, absolutely. Remotes like the URC-7560 cost the equivilent of something like $60 over there.
The URC-8811 is $25, plus USPS postage to Spain, which would be about $8.

Is this the same RealMagic IR receiver that comes with Sigma Designs
xCard and Hollywood+ PC-based hardware mpg decoders?
If it is, I'm successfully using the device upgrade Rob uploaded here:

That one was based on NEC1 protocol with main device 128.
Maybe with some minor tweaking it could work for your needs. |
