Newbie learning; probs with 8811 and Sony receiver

Newbie learning; probs with 8811 and Sony receiver

I have a Sony STR-DE845 receiver, which comes with an RM-LP204 remote. I'm using a learning JP1 remote, the URC 8811 to learn and program my MX500

I learned three keys from the original sony remote onto the 8811, but only one of them work. I downloaded the learned codes into IR, and it says things I don't understand ;-)

RCVR:L1 is protocol Sony12, device 13, sub-device blank, OBC 17, Hex Cmd 88 or 89, EFC 78 or 70. It also has "+2400 -606 +1200 -604 +600 -604 +600 -604 +600 -604 +1200 -604 +600 -604 +600 -604 +1200 -604 +600 -604 +1200 -604 +1200 -604 +600 -25224 " in 'Sent repeatedly while key is held'.

First Question: or? what the heck does 78 _or_ 70 mean? Does one send 2 digit EFCs the same way one sends 3 digit codes, i.e. magic-digit-digit? This 'learned' key on the 8811 does work.

RCVR:L2 has nothing in the protocol, device, sub-device, OBC, Hex Cmd, EFC, or Misc fields, but it does have "+20 -114668 +20 -131070 +20 -131070 " in the Sent once when key is pressed field. This 'learned' key on the 8811 does _not_ work.

Second Question: No protocol? Is that even possible? Or does no protocol mean it's the same protocol as the main device, and therefore that L1 and L3 are specifying protocol and device because they're different from the main device?

I don't think it matters, but L1 is "go to previous am/fm tuner channel preset", L2 is "go to next am/fm tuner channel preset", and L3 is "Set sound field to normal surround".

Any help is, of course, greatly appreciated. I'm extremely grateful to all of you for all the work you've put into making my life better :D

Instead of reinventing the wheel, why don't you try one of the exisiting Sony STR files in the Audio folder?

78 OR 70 means that the EFC could be either one of the two listed values. This is because the Sony12/15 protocol can handle two different device codes, and IR has no way of knowing which of the two EFCs would refer to the correct device code in any specific setup/upgrade.

In the Audio/0158 (the usual Sony receiver setup) setup code, device 16 is the first device code and device 13 is the second device code, so the second EFC would be used in this case.

In this case, it means you need to re-learn the key, since it did not learn correctly.

If it does not work, then it probably is a bad learn of the key. However, the Sony12/15 protocol can send both 12-bit and 15-bit signals, and it is not uncommon for Sony to mix the two on any given product.

L1 is a correct learn.

L2 is a bad learn, try learning it again. The correct values for the key are Sony12, device 13, OBC 16.

L3 is the first part of a SonyDSP protocol signal, which shows up as Sony15, device 36, OBC 96. These codes are too long to be learned, but you can use the SonyDSP upgrade file to produce this code, as well as discrete codes for all the other sound fields.

Any of the 3 Sony protocols (Sony12, Sony15 and Sony20) can show up on a device, and multiple device numbers are usually used. The number after "Sony" is the length of the codes in bits. Sony ran out of device codes and kept adding more bits to get more device codes. Since there are only 128 OBCs per device in the Sony protocols, frequently more than one device code is used, which can change the length of the codes.

I've got the preset up and down working, and now I have the tools and the knowledge to get that sound field thing working, too.
